Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Where can I buy an exhaust gas analyzer?

    Hi everyone. Great forum I've been checking back regluarly for a wealth of information! So thanks already.

    I'm looking for a gas tester so I can tune my 1990 Mk2 Golf GTI.
    Its going well, but its a recent purchase and I wont be satisfied until I've tuned it perfectly myself.

    I've found a cheap strobe from SuperCheap Auto, but they dont seem to sell the gas testers.
    So far I've tried, SuperCheapAuto, Repco and AutoOne, with no joy. I'm looking for a $50-200 unit that just measures CO, not the $5k+ pro units that do 4/5 gases.

    Also, I'm assuming I can tune the Digifant Mk2 with a gastester, and it wont have a cat?

    Also, also, is this the best way to tune accurately?

    The digifant computer runs very efficiently and smoothly in comparison to the K-Jet CIS injection system used in earlier MK2's and MK1's which dosn't deliver the same economy but is still a great system. Through some clever electrical adjustments you can trick the computer into thinking that the engine is running cold constantly and it will add additional fueling compensating the situation. Though i would leave that all alone as it only fowels up the spark plugs and gives only marginal power gains

    All you need to do is symply repalce your spark plugs, fuel filter, posibly air filter and advance the timing to 6 degrees at 900rpm which gives good power.

    The Australian spec mk2 GTI's all have a cat converter, as all petrol vehicles sold after 86 in Australia have.

    Your best bet would be to simply take your mk2 to a fuel injection specialist and run it on the dyno with the 4 gas aniliser measuring your results.

      Hi TETT,
      thanks for the reply, can you expand a little in a few areas:
      1. Which 'plugs do you recommend?
      2. Fuel Filter, Air Filter?
      3. Which mod to the air box have you seen? (your sentance wasnt finished above...good cliffhanger!)

      I'll check out advancing the timing at 900rpm and see how that goes.
      Is it possible to still use a Gunsons Exhaust Gas Analyser (CO Meter) to check the mixture with a Cat?

      And lastly, can you recommend any workshops with a good reputation for tuning Mk2's in Sydney?

        I have spent a lot of time at dyno tuners mostly croydon auto sports in silverwater and v&e rigoli racing in wetherill park playing with my MK2 turbo trying to extract the most power out of it, but it has a fully programable ems computer. They like to charge a fair bit though they are great at tuning.
        As far as filters and air box mods go i would either stick a k&n panel filter in your airbox and remove the restrictive snorkel that sits inside the bottom of the airbox and replace this with a 3" flexi tube to duct cold air into the box from the front of the car. Or you may still be able to get a k&n 57i induction kit for it which mounts directly to the air flow meter and has a cone filter with heat shroud replacing the airbox all together. I have seen the air flow meter modified internally to allow extra airflow and quicker operation but they are a sealed set up and you can get into problems doing this so i wont say how its modified.... I run iridium plugs in mine and mann filters for fueling but i have a stainless steel 10 micron air filter..
        You should be able to use the gunsons exhaust gas analyser without a problem with your cat converter.
