Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Post APR tune Insurance company suggestions?

    HI All,

New dubber here, just bought a 2007 Polo GTI last week. I'm considering having an APR stage 1 tune done, and I spoke to my current insurer (BD) to see what effect it would have on my premium. Their response was that they generally won't insure cars which have been modified to improve performance.

So, here's my question; can anyone recommend an insurer that is happy to work with lightly modified cars without gouging the insurance premium? Any experience/help greatly appreciated!

    Cheers and thanks, Steve

I was with Virgin and they cancelled my policy when I fitted coilovers. Now with Shannon's. They will cover any legal mods.

+1 for Shannon's. Premiums are one thing but how easy they are to deal with when making a claim is where it really matters.

Nice and quick folks; much appreciated! AAMI looking good so far, Shannons won't insure the car/quote online if it's being driven on a daily basis.
If anyone has any other suggestions I'd be keen to hear them...

WTF? I had my daily insured with them.

GIO & Coles insurance were happy to take my coin.

NRMA were also fine with mods but expensive.

I'm an old fart so old fart + mods might not be an issue. As we all know, insurance companies hate young people - they are all run by Grandpa Simpson.

Maybe it's just theonline quote they won't give for a daily?

I'm 40+ so not quite an old fart, but certainly different to an 18yo! Will look into GIO/Coles as well.

Another vote for Shannons here. They've had no problems with any of the mods on my cars, from a Stage 1 tune on the Beetle through to the full works Stage 3 on the Golf.

No change in premium due to the mods, only increases if I raised the agreed value to cover the costs of replacing those mods.

No problems with insuring daily drivers either.

Shannons definitely need to talk to a human. They want to know if you are an enthusiast - they could still knock you back though.

Thanks for all the help folks; had a chat to Shannons this morning and decided to go with them. It's nice when an insurer is actually encouraging you to heavily modify your car!!

+1 for Shannons. The might be reluctant to insure you with a daily driver unless you have a good history with a car club or a cams licence or something to that effect. I was having a decent chat to the guys when I was in the WRX club and they basically said that people in car clubs tend not to make dodgy claims which if you think about it make sense.

Last month I made my first ever claim ( wife reverses into road grader after being distracted by alarms and display on dash warning of impending impact lol - dont ask ) and I chose a premium repairer myself and the whole thing went through flawlessly.
My car is fairly modified too with a bigger turbo and other necessities and yes they like to hear what you've done too.

Thanks PR, the guys I spoke to at Shannons were very helpful and happy to tell me of all the mods to their cars, too!
