Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Standalone ECU's - What have you got?!

    Hey guys,

wanted to start a thread about standalone ECU's.

What car do you run it on? What things is it doing? Who tunes it?

    KGO

    Megasquirt - VR6 turbo
Runs everything, Fueling, Spark output to coil pack, Water meth injection, VVT, Boost control, Launch control, Flat shifting, Fan control and a couple of other outputs.

Megasquirts are fine if you are keeping the tune conservative
Probably the best thing to happen to the home tuning market in years

        Autronic SMC
Beninca is the only place to go for them that you would trust
Their dyno reads low, so you get a lot of doof doofs who don't come back because they are "disappointed" with the result LOL

I've got the Qpeng kit for my MK1 which I believe is MBE - not actually unboxed it yet...don't even want to think about wiring and tuning at this stage :/

Not sure what you mean with the "keeping the tune conservative" comment.

It does everything every other ECU does bar drive by wire.

Cheers Stu. It's a while off yet, but no doubt I'll have lots of questions to ask!

There is a world of difference between the premium ECU's and a megasquirt, (or a Haltec, EMS, Link et al)
It is not just about the features, but the precision of control. I could tune to 1 rpm and 1kpa and 0.1 degree, but more important is the interpolation and the speed of response, and the fact it actually hits the numbers that have been inputted.

My current build is with a MoTeC M1 series, it runs direct injection, only 2 aftermarkets in the world (MoTeC and Pectel/Cosworth) can do that right (Haltec will say they can but ask Camilleri in the 3MPS from the Proddie championship... BOOM) and swings BOTH cams independently of each other

BTW the Megasquirt is a great product!
Please don't think I am saying it isn't, it is just at a different level, 99% there for 50% (or less) of the price and 200% of what most people need

We tune many Autronics, Motecs, Vipecs and Haltechs mainly on the Jap cars. I like the Autronics and Vipecs only because I"m quite familiar with them but the other guys opt for the Motec, quite a range in prices of course.
With the Euro's you can do a lot more with the factory ECU's these days so unless your doing something unique its often worth sticking with the factory ECU.

I've got a DTA S60 pro in my car. DTAfast S 60 PRO ECU

It's good for a mid level ecu, particularly in the way it interfaces to my dash and data logger.

Local tuners that are familiar with the system are hard to find.

If I did it again and I had a lot more money, I'd go Motec.

If I had the coin and I was building a super car MoTeC would be the go for sure!

MS3x is definitely a good ECU for the money. The software and the options it has makes it super easy for everything I need it to do thats for sure!

                            Whats your favourite?

Stock ECU's from ME7.5 up are fantastic, but when you go from N/A to turbo it's not ideal for that application.

Can I ask what sort of cost the DTA S60 is Pete? have you had a crack at any of the tuning?

The S60 was $1650 with a set of plugs.

I made all the looms from scratch myself and all of the initial configuration.

I can tune it my self but because it's a race car it's not practical to tune while driving .

Tuning is pretty easy, because it has an Lambda sensor you can get the tune roughly right and then get it to generate a correction map.

After you've done that you can just run it closed loop.

For track use though I'd still tune on the dyno.

The S60 will work with all the stock sensors.

I've got mine running sequential ignition and injection working off the internal 60-2 VR pickup and an Audi V8 cam position sensor.
