Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • High voltage reading TPS

    Long story short.

    The wires going into my TPS are reading around 11.45v. This is with the sensor unplugged. Shouldnt it be no more than 5.0v?

    Doing my head in, why's it reading so high?

    Passat b3 16v 2.0L

    Fly-by-wire throttle right? There will be a battery voltage wire there to operate the motor Usually 2 thicker wires are for that.

      It's a cable throttle mate.

      What's the problem with the car? They are just switches, so the voltage doesn't matter.

        its possible its a 12v sensor, but outputs 0-5v.

          They are just micro switches, the car is from the 90s

            all my 90s cars have had a TPS sensor.

            if it IS a TPS then its a variable resistor and will have a voltage range.

              I have had a few of these Passats and I am pretty sure they only have switches that tell the ECU the throttle is wot or closed and nothing in between. The load sensing is done by the airflow meter flap position.

              While your google pulls up a lot of picture with TPS visible, all the ones I looked at are from VWvortex which ran a different version of the engine. It is a 2 stage TB not a single plate like a recent TB has.

              My 90s reference was maybe a bit of a sweeping statement, the technology in that car is ancient.

              Hopefully the OP can tell us what he has

                      You're absolutely right. Up to 1994 they had 3pins switch and from 1995 they had throttle valve control module with the 8pin connector.
