  • BLUEFIN Killed ECU??

    Hi all

My brother has a MV5 GOlf TDI which has been running a bluefin tune for ages.
One day he was unable to start the car.. thought it was a fuel pump.

Took it to VW and they cleared and updated the ECU .. car started fine again.. they said it was a batch of bad fuel

Yesterday after trying to reflash with Bluefin again. BUT. it failed halfway!.the car didn't start! Similar fashion to before..
would crank and crank but car woundn't start

Tried to use the bluefin to restore back to factory mapping but it would come up with E001 error unable to READ the ECU or something..

Its now at a mechics who said they have spent a whole day on it but can't get the ECU to hold the flash.

Do I take it back to VW? Can they do something this mechanic cant?

Is there a chance the ECU is dead ?
What sort of damage bill expected??

Will Superchips Bluefin warrant or pay the repair bills?

VW can probably fix it again.

They will have loaded the latest software and the ECU may have been a bit behind. So when you flashed it with the stored tune, it has had a conflict, for want of a better word.

I reckon you need to have VW flash it again and then read that file with the Bluefin and have another tune written. Then flash that one in.

I don't know how you go about sorting that with Superchips though. I'd email to find out.

      Thanks for that h100vw

Thats interesting... will see how we go tomorrow and will post back.
But yes that makes sense.. flashing with the OLD bluefin mapping on newer VW ECU software could have screwed things up.

        Potentially.

We definitely don't flash older versions of tunes over new standard files.

You should get in touch with Superchips for advice.

Okay so Superchips reckon I need a over ride code... problem is it will be 10pm over there when i get the the mechnics in the morning to even attempt it.. (needs to be done on the spot)

Are there any Bluefin agents here that could help us out with the override?

              thanks

There's something weird going on here because normally an updated ECU wont let you flash anything on it because the flash counter has been incremented( and a couple of other things). The thing is we don't know if the car was updated by VW or not either so its sort of guessing as to whats really going on.
It could for example be the original HW and SW file version but a bad flash due to voltage drop at some point, although the bluefins seem to handle lower voltages than any other device and the diesels are quick to flash regardless but its still a possibility. It could also be a hardware failure within the ECU not unlike the MED9 eeprom data issue that was affecting the MK5 gti's and even some golf R's. You can update this and fix it seemingly but it can come back again _ I dont think it would be this though because you were able to write to it

Let me see what the SC guys have to say and I'll see if we can sort something out as I'd just be guessing at this stage might be a simple fix

                      Thanks for that..

As for how I managed to flash it.. i have no idea but perhaps using "multifile" Superchips gave me bypassed the need to have car reading sent back to superchips before re-downloading new map ? :S

had a long string of emails back and forth with the Superchips crew in UK and they got me a map that we put on this morning that was compatible with the VW updated Software..

                          lucky! no ECU damage..
