Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    hi

i heard something interesting the other day. hear this, a group of guys in adelaide are using golf 1600 motors in formula 2 (i think). they say their getting 190bhp from them with the following mods:
    -single side draft carby
    -exhaust
    -cams (?)

is this true? why aren't we doing this to our mk1's peoples . let me know

How nice do you think it would be to drive one of those engines in the traffic, and having to rebuild it every 6 months?

Yeah theres a guy locally who races a car with a fully rebuilt golf motor. Hes always rebuilding it though.

Bitza on this forum has a 170hp 1.6 lump he will part with for the right money!

Not ideal as a daily driver though.

Its true 25 years ago 190 hp in a F2 in Aus and F3 rest of world.
Stressed to the limit for 1600cc
You can't beat capacity and late engines do it easier with 2000cc.

Yeah I'd love a crazy 1600 engine that will rev its brains out and make some big numbers but, I think I will stick with my torque monster 2L thanks. Makes the drive to the shops heaps of fun and it will do the odd track day as well.
MK1 floG soon to have 16v 2L with cable change gbox - need a 16v turbo manifold

"Fit the gearbox ya bum." Loon - best post ever!

AF2 or australian formula 2 is a CAMS class of racing currently most active in NSW. The engine of choice is a 1.6 single cam golf motor with power output in the region of 170hp, depending on how hard they are reved. The original engines were John Judd/Engine Development engines from the UK, based on his SuperV class of engine but with 2 48mm weber carburators rather than the mechanical fuel injection used in SuperV class racing. The engines are extensively modified with most of the vw internals discarded, using custom rods, crank and pistons, along with a solid lifter cam and an extensively modified cylinder head.

What class of racing uses a Golf 16v head on a 2L block?

                golf racing

not us, formula 3 a FIA class have used 2 litre 16valve golf engines in the past but of late have been outclassed by the GM, honda Mercedes engines etc. We looked at allowing stock 2litre into our class but it was thought that there was no real advantage so i didn't proceed
