Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • S3 intercooler install Brisbane

Does anyone know of anywhere in Brisbane that installs the S3 intercooler and won't cost an arm and a leg?

    Thanks in advance.

Mike webber prestige did my eurojet cooler install, was around $300-$350 from memory. Can't imagine the s3 being too much different.
    Give them a call.

Don't you just cut a bit of the old piping off and attach the S3 intercooler with new bolts? Even $200 would be a pretty good wage for that...

Bit more to it than just that. The whole front end has to come off to get old cooler out then install the new one. Your looking at 3hrs work!

Had a chat to Mike yesterday and he said it would take around the 3/3.5 mark so going to go ahead and order it of ECS tonight.

Brendan I remember you saying you needed some extra bolts and clamps for the install, you don't happen to have them written down do you?

Mate, when I get home tonight I'll post them up for you. Good to hear your getting one

The bolts you want are m6x1 20mm long and you need 9 of. And two 2.5" hose clamps.

Did some google-ing and found a parts company based in Germany that has it landed at $535 which is only 20 more then the old ECS price, so not to bad really, so going to grab it off them.

Im assuming if the part number is the same one listed on the ECS website that it will be the same. The picture they have has the alloy end to the tanks, but the only thing that has me worried is the listing is under the 2.0l FSI instead of TSI.

Sure thing, but the process is pretty easy/straight forward: bumper off, chop-chop, new IC+srews on, Bumper on. Not very challenging work...DIY possible...

Looking into doing the S3 IC swap too, but found a post on a random forum earlier today where a guy with a South African Mk6 GTI reckons that his factory cooler was the same thickness as the S3 cooler, just with the plastic end tanks rather than the aluminium ones, and only noticed while swapping it for the S3 IC he ordered. Another guy in Malaysia said his factory hoses lined up perfectly with the S3 cooler, and didn't need any trimming to fit.

It makes me wonder if there's been a changeover to the bigger IC from the factory sometime along the MY evolution from when the Mk6 GTI was first released up until now. Can anyone confirm or provide any more info?
