Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • APR Exhaust/Downpipe for MK6 GTI

Looking at an exhaust - essentially want a better sound (as I will never get that oh so exxxy shrek of the R32)

is the APR one a good one? or other branks like Miltek better?

What have all of you done?

go to exhaust shop, cut out resonator, enjoy more sound for less $ and weight savings.

you could do a muffler delete but it gets pretty noisy (especially since the rear muffler on the GTI is the width of the car, the Tig's is only a small suitcase size one)

            milltek is rather quiet.

apr is loud when pushed, but a bit tinny at low rpm. sounds like an empty can.

akrapovic is probably the loudest, deep sound at low rpm and loud angry sound at WOT.

I have a Milltek non res . It is quiet at cruising but has a nice tone under load . Having said that, it's not loud enough for me, so I've ordered the APR RSC. I know a guy who has one on his mk6 GTI and it looks and sounds awesome. Gunshot like DSG farts as well!
Akrapovic is supposed to be one of the best catback systems out there but very expensive .

i have installed an apr downpipe only, and have titanium tips with the stock catback. i cant stand the drone and increased noise levels of catbacks, plus they add no extra power.
i like the serenity that a euro car has, its not as refined as a bmw or audi or benz, but its a lot more refined than a japanese car. so why ruin it with a loud and droney exhaust. im not 18 anymore

Me go for Milltek, but my best choice will be Supersprint

Might be worth investigating this. The seller is on the Gold Coast.

I did a lot of YouTube searches and listened to many xorst. Would have loved the sound of capristo on R32. Absolute f'in amazing.

That said, for the GTI, I liked APR sound best. Got the full kit - TBE. Love it.

I would steer you away from Milltek. A bit too mild, might as well stay with stock. That is the experience with a number of people here that went Milltek but now switching to APR for the louder bang.

It is a common complaint that the euro exhausts are generally too quiet, whereas the Yankie ones can often be too loud! I'd happily suggest someone gets an unresonated or a 3"cat back euro, whereas the same from 42DD I deal with is bloody noisy, great for the young'ins but way too noisy for most. I sell 99% 2.5" resonated cat backs with the magnaflow straight through mufflers, and that's just right in my opinion. Brands do make a difference, but so too the mufflers, resonators and diameter, wall thickness and even tips!
