No chance on the standard turbo. Sorry to burst your bubble.

You're probably best to check out the Polo 9N3 subforum to see what the GTi guys can get out of this engine since it is the last car to use the old 1.8 turbo.

It all depends on what you are after. You can gain a little by maxing out the K03 but for any larger you'll need

            Injectors
            Intercooler
            K04 or bigger
            Clutch and LSD
            Retune to suit injectors
            Aftermarket boost controller

You could do a K04 mod fairly cheaply if you get the kit off an S3 and dont' bother with an FMIC but its still not a modded WRX killer they are AWD afterall
Meh go crazy with a GT series turbo and kick some butt

VAG just to clear a few things up for you.
Apologies if you know this but the S3 is an Audi, which comes fitted with a K04 turbo, to support this it is fitted with larger injectors, a higher pressure fuel pump and a bigger MAF(air flow meter).
Finding a scrap S3 to get these bits from in Australia wouldn't be that easy.
Also, the K04 on an S3 has a different outlet to the down pipe when compared to your Golf, due to the 4wd. This would mean getting a new downpipe as well. There are off the shelf conversion downpipes available on the net.

For $5k though you could do the conversion and get your 250hp but you will still be following your mates in the Subarus.

@Mark, why the aftermarket boost controller?? Just curious.

Seb had an S3 that he was doing a turbo upgrade to something bigger a while back and I know the owner was going to off load the old stuff. I thought about putting it on the A3 but now the R has turned up I've run out of time. It might not be available though

What I meant but didn't explain properly with the Boost controller is that with his being a 99 it will be an ME3.8.x without a MAP sensor so boost control is effectively back calculated calulated from the MAF table. You run the bigger S3 MAF sensor housing for sure but still boost control becomes an issue at high load and its never perfect most likely because it can't do the calulations and have the wastegate in the perfect position in time. The simple solution is to put in a bleed valve just at the point where you would like the boost to be capped this way its never going to exceed it, the ECU still manages boost below this point though. If your chasing lower targets then the worry about boost control not being as effective isn't there. So not an EBC as I said last night, just a bleed as a safeguard. They are pretty cheap and work well.
Oh if he had an ME7 ECU as used in the later cars you don't need anything at all of course

Got you Mark, I wasn't thinking of it like that. I didn't use one on my A3 with the hybrid turbo. I can see the protection feature being worth while though.

You're going to struggle to keep up with a modded WRX, especially off the line as you're missing power to your two rear wheels.

Bigger turbo etc will be a hell of a lot of fun, but if your ultimate goal is to beat the WRX, you're going to want to start thinking about something with AWD.
