Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. • Removing Resonator and Chipping

    Hi All,

I am new here, great to be able to talk to fellow Tigsters.

I own a 2010 125kw auto Tig, I want to mod my car a little bit, 3 things I am thinking, removing resonator, Chip and lastly putting 17's or 18's.

Firstly has anyone removed their resonator? I just want a little bit more sound, the car is to quiet, I dont want drone, I just want growl... Will it still be EPA legal?

Secondly, anyone chip their Tig? Powerchip or APR? will it feel factory still? but much more torque and power?

    Any advice is much appreciated....

The exhaust setup on the tiguan has 4 restriction points.
The first being the downpipe from the turbo (this will allow you to utilise stage 2 ecu upgrades)
The second being the catalytic converter.
    The third being the resonator.
The fourth being the rear muffler.

The resonator basically difuses the variable airflow and allows the exhaust system to flow smoothly (from what i have read)
This will net you a slight performance boost if it is removed however hte sound will still be muffled from the rear muffler.

The rear muffler is the way you want to go if you want more sound (check out my thread)
    Video here: http://videobam.com/xYgSl

Exhaust setups are always going to be a personal preference so i would suggest going to youtube to find some soundclips of systems with sections deleted to get an idea of what yours would sound like.
Information that might be of use to you is the Mk6 GTI uses the same engine coded as EA888 so you could search for those terms and see if they have done anything since the tiguan isn't as popular.
Also search for muffler delete or resonator delete.

Bear in mind most people tend to delete the resonator and the muffler at the same time with a straight through pipe from what i have seen.

The chip will give you the best performance for $$ gain over anything.
I went with APR and have had no issues at all.
Feels like a totally different car to drive, almost like a sports version of the same car.

18" or 19" wheels tend to look the best without causing an overly harsh ride.
    I have no issues with my 19 x 8 ET35 Wheels.

WOW, thanks for that info !!!
The removal of the resonator for me isnt really about performance gain, was just hoping for a bit more sound out of the Tig, nothing major but just a bit more growl... Being a new car though, I am a little hesitant on these type of obvious visual mods were it may be illegal and void any insurance claims.

If you want performance, go the chip and then downpipe if you need more.
The APR ecu remap is lockable and should not be detectable by the dealership.

If you want sound, you will need to do something to the rear muffler.
This is obviously more noticable but shouldn't limit the warranty as it is only going to affect the end of the exhust system.

            Powerchip?

That's a blast from the past!

            Are they still around?

IMO stick to tuners that only do Euro cars!

This is a good clip of the GTI before and after resonator, makes me think that I actually may get some sound from removing it... the GTI sounds awesome without it.

Just be aware that the Mk V Golf doesn't use the same engine as the newer Mk6/Tiguan so you may end up with a different note/warble.

                      Hi Nindey,

Before even considering Powerchip, I'd have a look here, the video below pretty much sums up the whole ordeal!

FWIW, I've only heard brilliant things about APR, not that i've had my Tig tuned yet!

                      Cheers,

Please take some before and after videos for us so we can compare my muffler delete and your resonator delete.

ahhh unfortunately didnt take before but is super quiet, will take some after video... It defiantly has changed the sound, not dramatic but more base under load, no real feel in change of acceleration except feels like peak power comes on quicker... overall the price $60 I think is inline for what you get...
