Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Upgrading 90Tsi

    Hi guys,

    New person here on the forum.

    This is probably going to sound very stupid, but I thought I may as well ask.

    I have a 90tsi Vw golf mk 6.
    Is it possible to add a supercharger to make it the same specs as a 118tsi?

    Also, are there any big upgrades that are available for this car(90 tsi) besides the ECU tune?
    Also, which Blow off Valve am I able to get ? ( I really like the noise of a nice turbo car, with a well tuned bov)

    TBH probably better off going with an ECU remap because of the ease of hiding from the dealer if you have any issues during the warranty period and secondly during servicing if you choose to get it done at a dealer.

    If you go fitting an aftermarket supercharger they can argue that faults that could be associated with that are warranty voided and then your stuck with an expensive repair bill.

    With the tune you could always add an intake from one of the big companies like GruppeM, Forge etc for that tiny bit more horse power.

    Hope that helps.

      Hi mate been looking at the same thing (well not supercharger) but have been told biggest issue is that turbo so restrictive (same as 77tsi) and that d/p etc wont boost much if at all. So im just going for the tune on my 90tsi

        it all depends on how much cash you want to splash.

        Mild:
        Bluefin ECU tune and Carbonio APR intake (if there's one for 90TSI) would do a good job.

        Extreme:
        CPC in Artarmon did a awd conversion and put different beasty engine in a Mk6 Golf Wagon (see this month's Motor magazine hot tuner challenge section). total cost is $120k per the magazine.

            Thanks for the response guys.

            I guess I will go look into the ECU tune. Do you know if that affects the fuel consumption a lot?

              Mate, you are a legend. I only knew about APR and REVO tuning... have never heard about super chips... was always a bit iffy about doing the APR tune since my car is the 90kw version with no cruise control. So I can't even switch between the programs...and am expected to pay $1300....

              Did a bit of research and saw that with the bluefin tune, you can turn it on and off physically with the unit they send out to you. Same power gains. $700 ish! Going to call the Brisbane dealer to see if I can work get one today!

                I'm looking at getting my 90TSI tuned as well. I've read quite a lot about people with 118TSI and GTI getting tuned, but not so much about the 90TSI. Has anyone on this forum had the superchips remap done on their 90TSI? And if so, are the gains noticeable and worth the $$? Any feedback would be much appreciated.

                  Hi khonfahm

                  Talk to Jmac about tunes. He is in Brisbane and highly recommended.

                  I believe you can get the same output as the 118 from the 90 with a tune.

                    The 90TSI is definitely worth tuning, but it is difficult to squeeze any more than around 110kW from the engine due to the very limited size of the turbocharger.

                    In the 77TSI, the turbo is not working as close to the limits as it does in the 90TSI; as such, we rate our 77TSI tune at 100kW and the 90TSI tune at 110kW - but even then the 20kW gain is very noticeable and really makes the engine come alive. Our tune also remaps the throttle mapping for sharper response/less delay when stabbing the throttle. Combined with improved ignition timing curves all across the range, the end result is a car that is not only more fuel efficient during idling/low loads but with a strong wide powerband at open throttle.

                      Hi there,

                      I have been looking into this shortly after picking up my 90TSI DSG also. after about 2 months of research, I have decided not to do anything for the following reasons:-

                      1. my dsg plays up on me a few times already in the 3,500kms driven so far, don't want VW to have any excuse if the dsg do fail to work completely during warranty;
                      2. you simply won't get the stock 118TSI performance as per reasons above re: turbo size and bear in mind that our 1.4 doesn't have the supercharger which eventually does help alot during low torque. a flashed 90TSI 0-100 is like 8.6s. don't ask me where I read it, it was a month or two ago;
                      3. for the amount of $$$ to get to the 118TSI (in number terms), seriously, you might as well sell it or trade it in for the 118TSI (which will offer a lot more potential to mod);
                      4. i think there is a reason why VW uses a 2.0 engine for golf GTI than a 1.4 (as per polo)... so I guess that's the limits for this engine was never designed for any crazy stuff...

                      afterall, I still need my car for a good 10 years to get me to and from places...

                        hey Alok.

                        I went and did the APR 6 free Hour trial.

                        Definately worth every cent. You should do the same, to see if you would prefer a tune or stock.

                        Only reason I didn't get the APR was there was no way for me to turn it on and off...(my mk6 does not have cruise control, so no program switching) so this was a bit disappointing. Also APR was $1300, while competitors are around $750.00

                        With the blue fin unit, switching between stock and normal is very easy.

                        I messaged John from DNA tuning so he can give me a run down on how their product works, since he is in Melbourne.

                        I guess go get a trial, see if you like it. If you do, do some research and see which one suits you most in regards to price and functionality.

                            Haha, yeah for sure man.

                            I have a 6 speed manual, very smooth, and VERY noticable Don't know how they go on the DSG gearbox.

                            I had a 1.8T Audi A3 before this car, and pretty much with just the ECU tune, it was as fast as my A3, and a lot more responsive.
