Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Stage 2 Requirements

I've noticed though, Stage 2 tunes all require as a minimum a downpipe upgrade and a cold air intake.

I've just gotten myself a Stage 2 tune from Superchips. One thing I'm risking here is that I'm still running a foam panel filter in-place of the stock paper filter. Anyone knows if this is just bad for the car or what sort of effects I'll experience long term?

Most Stg 2 tunes just require the DP. Mine made the same power with or without the CAI but I keep it for the sound.

My Stage 2 experience is a little mixed at the moment. I find that I don't get as much torque or the boost doesn't kick in as hard as my Stage 1, also at times I find that there seems to be some slight hesitation when the turbo kicks in.

I'm wondering if its just that the car needs to relearn from the new mapping or that I'm lacking a proper cold air intake. My car doesn't feel as nuts as my Stage 1 tune if not worse.

Most of the stage 2 tunes add more mid range so they won't feel as manic as stage 1 but will actually be faster. The turbo spools up much faster with an aftermarket dp so boost comes on sooner. Only way to really tell though is to put it on a dyno.

Normally it's the mid range boost that pushes you hard in the back; I'd say just ask Superchips what's going on - they'll most likely send you a revised tune.

I assume you did the DP first and then the tune; did the car feel less aggressive after putting the DP on as zbeasty has mentioned?

I did ask Superchips and they did send me a revised tune, which made things worse. The mid-range boost was like it's hesitating, it kicked in then for a split second felt like it cut off and then back again and everything else felt the same.

Stage 1 for me was marvelous, when boost kicked in mid-range I just felt so much torque I was stuck to my seat.

The car may seem faster but then right now it feels like I've lost torque or the push to seat feeling is more bland, mid-range is not like how it is in Stage 1.

Perhaps the ECU needs to adjust to the new mapping, so I'll give it a few days. I also want to send the car to a dyno, but I haven't found the time because majority of dyno shops are in the far east. I live close to the city fringe in the west, and the closest dyno is at Chasers Motorworks, they are fully booked out to forever.

I've found the reason for my dismal Stage 2 performance. Superchips have actually given me a DSG tune for my manual transmission!! I've just uploaded the new map for my car and, OMFG the car is like a mad crazy monster, there is not enough road and speed allowance for my second gear now! Now I hope I don't blow up my turbo as the new found power will become an addiction to keep going WOT.

thats great that u found the solution. ive found that with my stage 2, the traction control light flickers all the way thru 3rd gear, i usually taper off as pushing hard in 4th is pushing the speed limits excessively

i doubt i'll be able to drive my car that hard to have the traction control light to flicker that much. that chance will be very likely be on a track, but then i doubt there are that many track days coming up in the next few weeks/months.

don't you get to choose the transmission type on the Bluefin Desktop?

but good that they sorted that out.

i had called superships UK a few times and asked questions before i went to stage 2. they gave me the correct stage 2 tune without any dramas.

and yes, it's very addictive! i spent the next 2 weeks driving the car just for the sake of going WOT and experience that new found powaaar and screams, but kept it under the speed limits off course

also had a chance driving it on a track and loved it

will go on a track day very soon next month :p

btw, add a CAI and stage 2 intake pipe, you'll love it even more! wooshing, sucking and spooling noises are so gooood

the stock intake system is very restrictive, doubt upgrading it to foam panel one would do much.. Go for Carbonio APR for a neat look.

                          superchips - Google Search

Search engines can answer most questions like that gman90. There's a great deal more players in the VW tuning game than APR and Revo.

Bluefin engine remapping uses an ECU remap for your diesel or petrol engine and delivers better performance. Engine tuning with ECU chipping for diesel and petrol engines.

Superchips - Superchips optimise the performance of your car, helping to maximise your driving pleasure.

it's the official tuning partner for Volkwagen Racing in UK.

cost wise, it's probably the least compared to APR / GIAC / REVO.

power increase, it's probably gentler compared to the others. a Mk6 GTI tuned with GIAC + downpipe can reach 170kw dynoed at the wheel.

Bluefin stage 1, no downpipe, mine, did 144kw at the wheel, but power delivery is very similar to stock tune. but this guy here did 160 something kw at the wheel (i think he asked for a more aggressive tune).

Bear in mind at the wheel figures are roughly 20-30% less than on paper due to losses through the drivetrain.

Quick outline. Superchips was first started in 1977 and renamed to superchips in 1991. Currently offering ECU tuning to over 50 makes of vehicles in the UK alone, so you can safely say as a company, they've been around a lot longer than most. Not knocking others as there are numerous good tuners out there, but to answer the question, a heck of along time...
