Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • DSG changes up in manual DSG Shifting mode?

I have APR Stage II+ and most times I drive in Manual (DSG Shifting)
However, at times the DSG will gear up early when I give it a little of the mark.
I have been told that I need a DSG tune, if so where is best to do this and what is altered??

When you say "shifts up early" I presume you mean significantly before the redline and when you say "Manual" I presume you mean you've got the DSG stick in the -/+ slot and you haven't just "overrode" the S or D mode by pressing one of the steering wheel paddles? I only ask because I haven't experienced that myself in my Stage II+ R

(btw... the + is the fuel pump, which you don't have or need cause you've got a GTI with a TSI rather than the older TFSI, but that's another topic )

In relation to the DSG tunes, in Sydney we have City Performance Centre who carry the HPA brand of DSG flash. Whilst other brands (GIAC and Custom Code) also have DSG flashes, their product pages read so similar to the HPA page, that I'm for one convinced their products are just a rebadged HPA (please note, that's my guess and hasn't been confirmed by GIAC or CC reps. Having said that, it also hasn't been denied by their reps when discussed in old threads...)

There are 4 stages of DSG tune. They start at "Stage 2" and that product is safe to use with the standard DSG clutch packs. Stage 3 is better suited to aftermarket clutch packs. Stage 4 is completely customisable.

If you did get aftermarket clutch packs, since you have a GTI and are putting the power through the front wheels, you can get the Stage 3 DSG tune but with the Stage 2 LC component, as it's pointless trying to launch a GTI above the 4750rpm limited offered by Stage 2. They'll sometimes refer to this as a "Hybrid" version. Note that it'll end up costing you several thousand for this upgrade after the clutch packs, seals, flash, and labour are included - and I do mean "several" and not "a few".

But give CPC a call, as they've got all the info and knowledge

I have never asked the source of the DSG flashes but seeing as I get them back in half an hour at all times of the day and night. With any modifications I ask for, I don't see them going to Canada each time to fulfill my requests. I know that the flash tool I use, wasn't developed by HPA. The DSG plugin comes from somewhere else entirely.

Hehe... as I said, I haven't had it confirmed. But seriously, if the marketting literature wasn't written or supplied by the same person, you'd have to question whether there's something strange going on there...

          Compare: HPA vs Custom Code

          Torque Limit:
          HPA:
"we have increased the DSG Gearbox’s ability to transmit torque from 350nm up to 500nm while still ensuring the stability and capability of all the mechanical moving hardware within the DSG gearbox."
          Custom Code:
"We have increased the DSG Gearbox's ability to transmit torque from 350 Nm up to 550 Nm while still ensuring the stability and capability of all the mechanical moving hardware within the DSG gearbox."

          Launch Control:
          HPA:
"A perfect launch out of the hole accompanied with a great 0-60 acceleration is one of the best ways to show off your performance mods."
          Custom Code:
"A perfect launch is accompanied with a great 0-60 acceleration is one of the best ways to show off your performance mods. "

          In-dash Display:
          HPA:
"When in D or S mode, the active gear is now displayed in the instrument cluster to the right of the PNRDS icons where it wasn’t previously (R32 etc)"
          Custom Code:
"When in D or S mode, the active gear is now displayed in the instrument cluster to the right of the PNRDS icons where it wasn't previously (R32 etc)"

          etc etc.
          Just saying...
