Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Standing quarters or whatever they are called seem to be a lot of money and effort for such a short time and the more effort and money spent the shorter the time and you don't have to make a car go around corners.

I much prefer the challenge of a race circuit but I do respect the drag guys all the same. Its all in the engineering challenge of improving what the manufacturer started out with.

          twistage??

The power I will be making will twist a mk1 on its first pass
hey bug racer or any other knowledgable folks..

im in the process of building a 1.9 8v for a hillclimbing mk1 which im hoping will benchtest around 200hp+ .. so i was wondering what you think would let go first on the mk1 chassis/engine mounts etc?
also if you knew what mods/bracing would be needed to stop this?

          cheers

Definately engine mounts . If you put a cage in that will help with chassis flex . Your best getting some solid engine mounts , and possibly bracing

I've just put in a cross brace from control arm to arm very easy to make i'll post size's shortly when i lift the car in the next day or so i'll even try and take a pic.
i have felt the the diff in front end rigidity turn in into corners feels a little better though knowing it's helping with keeping the front end together as in not wanting to do the splits if you know what i mean is assuring .

              cheers Dave

solid as in solid? or solid as in tough?

i can easily fit strut brace and front lower stress bar and illl probably reinforce the strut towers... any other major issues?

Whats going to flex the chassis ?
Surely not 200 hp which is a bit high for a 1.9.

I knew a guy with a beetle once that had 150hp . After 3 years of racing the doors wouldnt close properly . I havent seen a mk1 with more than 150 without a roll cage yet so I guess I cant really comment there . Change engine mounts from rubber to polyurethane . A bit harsher but less chance of them shearing under torque load

                      200??

200 hp which is a bit high for a 1.9.
200hp is me being conservative... the guy who sold me the engine said it would bench test at 300! so im not getting my hopes up in case it disappoints!

its a 1.6 bored and stroked to a 1.9, flat top pistons, balanced crank etc
the head is audi i think as it has massive valves and high lift cam
the head is polished and portmatched to fit the lynx manifolds, for which i have 2 twin 45 dellortos, plus matched extractors and a 2.5 inch exaust with side exit

i'm still cleaning it up and saving up for some bits i need
but ill let you guys know when its together and in something!... hopefully a nice stiff roll caged mk1

300 hp out of a 1.9 , Its gonna have to rev to 9000rpm and 45's arent enough to feed that kind of fuel to it . You'll be lucky to crack 200hp

Sorry to open an old thread, but i beat a mate of mine, who's 3.5L V6 magna has run as fast as a 14.91sec on the quarter, i dont know how much power my VR6 is making, but with the free flowing exhausts and intake mods, i'd like to think im nudging 200hp at the flywheel. Im looking for some more mods to break 200hp, then i plan to supercharge the 2.8, looking for 300hp@ the wheels.
