  • Mk5 2.0 TDI not starting - Oil pressure warning lamp - what to do?

    Hi everyone,

I tried searching for my problem in the forum but couldn't find a solution.

All was going rather well until this morning. Car didn't start (even after several attempts).
After ten seconds of turning the ignition the 'oil pressure' warning light comes on and followed by a 'Stop!' sign on the centre display.

I checked the oil level which seems fine. Would anyone know what the problem is?

Any help with this is much appreciated.

    Cheers!

Fully charge the battery if you didn't use the car for while. If you know that the battery is 100% OK, you need someone with VCDS to scan it for you, that's the first step in diagnosing it. But try starting it again maybe the fuel drooped down.

Thanks for the quick reply Transporter.

Battery seems fine... lights, radio etc. still work well. Car is frequently used and worked fine yesterday.
With a previous car I once experienced how a weak battery impacts ignition - it used to get weaker and weaker (including lights). But this doesn't seem to be the case here.

Anything else I could check? Or anyone in Sydney that has a VCDS? Would be happy to pay for the inconvenience and brekkie/lunch. Would very much appreciate if someone could help me out here.

      Cheers

You'll probably need VAG-COM to figure out why it doesn't start (if it isn't the battery or empty fuel tank). I'm guessing that it says "STOP" after ten seconds of the engine turning over to stop you from frying your starter motor.

Thanks Transporter! Found someone and got in touch, I'm hoping the one in my area is able to help me out.

Indeed - the "STOP" message comes up after a couple of seconds trying to start the engine. I also read somewhere that it could be an empty fuel tank - but my gauge shows "half full".

              Thanks for your reply!

If you are cranking the engine but it fails to start, then it will not build sufficient oil pressure. therefore the oil pressure warning light will come on.

                Ignore this as a symptom!!!

The TDi is prone to injector failure. If one injector fails, it cuts out all 4 injectors. If you get hold of a VAGCOM there would be an injector fault stored.
If this is the case then one or more injectors will need replacing and also the injector wiring. There may be some help with payment from volkswagen if the car has reasonable dealer service history.

Great advice cabby! Thanks for that. Will see what the VAGCOM says.

Ive had this happen to my 2.0 gt diesel 3 times the first time i called road side assist who were no help at all, and only through my persistence in cranking the engine for 3 minutes did i get the engine to start ,and once started it started every time,
As far as i can ascertain there must be a air leak which allows the Diesel to drain back into the tank .

is it usually cold when it struggles to start?
I have seen a number of 2.0TDIs struggle to start in the cold caused by different issues

Hi Ian, now that you mentioned it I remember that a month or so ago the car wasn't starting well. On a second attempt I had to turn the key for quite some time to get the engine started. Eventually it did (on the second attempt)... and never had a problem since then until on Monday the car just didn't start at all. Had a go tonight again, but nothing changed. Have someone coming with a VAG-COM on Saturday if all works out and hope to get a better picture of the problem.

Hi Lams, I guess cold is relative... would not think the car is suffering too much with Sydney's mild winter. What would be the problem though? It's still to warm to cause oil or diesel to become less runny/solid.
