  • APR Stage 1 boost drop???

    Hey guys,

i had my 2010 Golf GTI flash tuned by APR a week ago and im loving it, and think that the GTI should really be like this standard out of the factory! up until last week i took my car to quarter mile @ willobank.. after a few runs i noticed the boost was dropping... at the beginning of each gear it would go up to around 1.1 bar but then when the Rev reaches 5000rpm the boost starts to drop, sometimes it drops to stock boost but sumtimes even lower... i thought the car was overheating but then on the way bac to the starting grid i tested it and with softer acceleration the boost seems fine...

from then on... everytime when i drive the car aggressively the boost tends to drop...

has anyone got this problem with APR stage 1 ecu flash?

    cheers

Are you sure it's only APR'd cars, or your car that does this? It's normal for boost to drop at the top of the rev range with small turbo's after a chip (well, it does for the 1.8t's)

Not an answer, just a thought.

It's really a bit hard to comment on your post is all.

I mean, it happens to everyone in some degree. Hell, it happens on a hot day even with a stock turbo car when you're not even driving aggressively.

The hotter the air and the hotter the engine, the less power you will get. So how do you determine "what is normal" and what is a "problem". How do you even define "driving aggressively", because that'll change from person to person.

If there is actually a problem, numerous mechanical parts could be causing this issue. So if the problem is "bad" then it can be taken for a test drive and logging performed, or put on a dyno and checked out etc.

So I guess, if you believe you have an issue, go back to your APR dealer and ask them the question....

That's one you should be asking APR about really.

In general boost will tail off as the engine speed increases and gobbles up the boost you are making. The turbo can't keep up after a certain point, you use the boost quicker than the turbo can make it, in simple terms.

Whether the ECU is requesting less boost, due to some other reason, you would have to log it to find out.

You checked your DV? Known issue for boost leaks

thanks guys, i've already booked my car in after the Easter holiday, sorry if it was a noob question coz im actually new to VW and also new to turbo charged cars... i hav the forge DV spacer installed... will this lead to boost leaks? i'll hav it confirmed with Mike in 2 weeks... hopefully its fine and see how stage 2 goes ...

Have u got vagcom? U can log ur data and see ur boost, afr etc to see spikes or drops. Forge should be fine but good to double check its installed correctly too

Nope, i dun hav a vagcom but i hav a boost gauge installed and it reads data via the OBD2.. the boost drop should be related to stage 1 coz i tried the stock map and everything runs normal..... and after reading above it does feel like the little turbo is not catching up on producing power...

Could be a boost leaking with the tune selected then. Maybe a loose hose clamp that's allowing boost out under load but is ok at other times. Lower boost on the standard tune doesn't cause the problem.

I had this in the UK on a Leon Cupra, it would go into limp mode if you booted it a bit much when cold. Once warmed up it was good as gold all day long.

Eventually, I found a clamp that had stripped but looked ok. New clamp and all was sorted out. I figured that the hose expanded as it warmed up and made a better seal.

EDIT: I was a ****wit and didn't read the thread properly.

If you read his original post properly, he states that at the beginning of each gear boost would reach 1.1bar, but at 5000rpm the boost starts to drop.

This guy has a GTI, the GTI has a K03.

At 5,000rpm the boost drops off dramatically with the K03 and it runs out of puff because it's a wee tiny little turbo.

If I'm missing something here, and I've just made myself look like an idiot....please let me know.
