  • Cat back and intake

Hey there! Last week ordered my new R(5 door DSG,ACC,recaros, blutooth,MDI & reverse camera). I know a tune will net me the best results performance-wise, but would I gain anything at all from a cat-back system(say supersprint),and a cold air intake. Was only after a slight increase in power, don't want to lose any power or have the car bog down at low speeds.
Living up in Townsville means a tune is out of the question for now. On another topic,I'm about to order a new set of volk vrg2 19" wheels, not sure what colour would look best. The car is black. Is the black on black a bit too much? Any help is much appreciated, thanks!

With an exhaust and intake, you with get results, but for the best net results, you are better getting the tune too...
You are better off doing your research and driving down to Brisbane to get a tune. Don't let distance restrict you in what you want for your car... Remember, it's only a 13hr drive to Brisbane from Townsville.

Hey mate. I moved your thread to the Tuning and Performance forum.
You'd likely already find your answers in here...

      However....
Increases from the catback only are very minimal - ~<4kw even on a tuned car. It's the downpipe and motorsports (high flow) cat where you'll see the performance increase on a VW.
On a non-modified car, the CAI will at a minimum, change the induction/engine sound, and at the most, give you a few extra kw too. Not sure if it'd be enough for you to notice any difference. A good CAI in combination with a good downpipe and tune, that's another story... (you'll probably need a better high pressure fuel pump at that stage as well!).

You really are best to start off with a tune.
I'm not sure why living in townsville means a tune is out of question for you though?

If there are no dealers for ECU tunes around Townsville, then talk to a company that offers a hand-held unit so you can flash the car yourself...

Catback wont do much as all the gains exhaust wise are in the downpipe. As for intake they also say the stock intake is fine for a stock car but once chipped an intake will increase hp.

If your in townsville dont forget about bluefin/superchips tune which dont require you to visit a dealer but instead you do it by a controller yourself.

Have done dyno's of stock and EVOMS CAI on my R and the difference was -0.4kw to the EVOMS. It would be interesting to see what the other CAI's claim vs their actual on a stock car. Have yet to test the stock airbox vs EVOMS now that I have the DP and tune but that is on the list of things to do. Best thing you can do is get a tune as it makes the bottom end much better. That said the sound of the CAI and being able to hear the DV when you back off is definitely a plus.
Golf R 5 door, DSG, EVOMS CAI, TXS DP, Recode Tune.

            Hey ZBeasty,

I have to agree that CAI or air filter will not yield massive results, but they really cant be measured effectively on a dyno as s small fan just cant recreate the effects of high speed wind hitting a high speed car.

The best effort I have seen is TuneHouse's set up in Marrickville, Sydney, where he has a wind tunnel-like set up and the room is sealed up totally (pretty impressive stuff) - but even then its not perfect.

I think there has to be a couple of KW's in it, 1- 5((worst- best) on a stock set up for a turbo car?

Thanks for the input guys. Think I will go ahead and just get the cat-back and air intake for now, know I wont get much in performance,
just looking for a bit of sound and looks for now, once I run the motor in I will take the plunge on a tune.
I was thinking maybe Evolve Techknik tune? Has anyone had good results with them? Ive been told a few different things in the way of tuning the new R. Some say the ECU wont have to be opened, others say that they may have to and attach a chip inside the ECU. Whats the story?

Anyone want to guess what the peak gain was with a just a hiflow cat and dump and the stock rear (I think even zbeast doesn't know this)

less than 1kw, even if I saw 3 kws that could just be the normal variance but we did a few runs to verify things and it was consistent. The ECU is not so easily fooled. Note that is its peak though and yes theres a difference down the bottom end where the boost control is being given some grief but it not much there either.
Not that anyone would do this without a tune though but it was interesting and it was something I didn't expect at all.

So was it 1KW or 3KWs?
