Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Just sent the following email to APR, was hoping someone on the forum may have a similar experience

    Cheers

    Nick

    Hey

I was interested in the stage 1 ecru upgrade for my golf R. I just had a question about heat and long distance driving with it.

I live in Cairns, generally, in around town driving my oil temp is floating around 94 degrees and after some “spirited driving” it can go as high as 104 degrees. Mostly on the highway it floats between 93-97. I’m travelling about 2000km a week and love the idea of the upgrade but I am concerned as VW detuned the motor because of hot weather.

Would the ecru upgrade be safe for me to get? Or should I wait and save some money for the up rated air intake and intercooler? Is it true if I go for a bigger intercooler without replacing the turbo that I may experience more lag???? And would I require a custom tune due to these mods

    Thanks for your help

they say vw detuned it due to heat but i personally think it has more to do with it being less powerful than an s3 so it can compete in such a small market, afterall they didn't detune the s3 and it has the same motor

      Nick,

I'm sure James will answer your email tomorrow directly!

Hot weather testing has been carried out, Australia, Middle East, South Africa -

The Golf R (AUS Spec) does run a smaller intercooler, but its going to be a heat soak issue, not an engine protection issue.

Now we have seen 130 degrees C as a "normal" oil temperature in a standard car with spirited driving, so don't be concerned, even at 130. We did some hot weather testing at QLD Raceway in November on our stage 3 Golf R, track temp was around 50 C and no issues with any temps what so ever.

I think the R actually the same power as the S3, it's less power though than the TT-S - which has the same motor as the S3/Golf R.

just looked and thats true, more the reason they can't let a car that costs less have more power
