  • 42dd mk6 d/p - an alternative.......

Was doing some browsing and came across this D/P,

    VW Mk5/Mk6 FSI/TSI 3" Downpipe

    Not a bad price too.

Seems a nice alternative to the other products out there atm.

    Any thoughts........

Several members of the forums own 42DD (Draft Designs) products, including the downpipe you mention.

If you notice, on the page that you linked to, they have a street and racing series, as well as a resonated and non-resonated. Whilst the resonated and non-resonated is personal preference, the street/racing series is NOT an option in this country if you want to have a "legal" car. Basically you have to pay the extra $85 for the catalytic converter.

Also notice they have an option of "ceramic coating" option. You may be wondering why. If you look at "The Full Story", they mention that it is "CNC mandrel bent 14 gauge aluminized steel tubing". This is why there is the $140 option for a ceramic coating, as "aluminized steel" has a tendancy to rust.

Further more, if you read the FAQ that is available on "The Full Story" page, you will notice that they state that stainless steel is 3 times the cost of the "mild" steel they're using, and that even the cat would increase by 50% to 100% if its case was stainless steel. So they are honest about where they save their money compared to the other "comparable high quality" stainless steel exhausts which may cost 2 or 3 times as much.

They also mention in the FAQ that you could coat the exhaust yourself instead of purchasing their $140 ceramic coating.

You will also need to look for a "Stage II" ECU tune from one of the aftermarket ECU companies, otherwise you'll get CEL errors.

Finally, it does not appear that it's compatible with the Golf R due to the AWD system.

Please understand what I'm saying by the above post. From everything I've read of the feedback from people (at these forums and others) indicates that 42DD's quality of workmanship and the performance of their products is great, and comparable to the other well known off-the-shelf exhaust manufacturers for the Golf - just be sure to read and understand the information that 42DD are providing as to why their product is available for the cost it is, so you don't end up with any rude surprises!

Im probably biased but I think if youre looking for a cost effective option then you cant go past the eurojet system.
Its a quality stainless item with a build quality to rival the best. Includes a cat for $799inc GST or a cat and resonator for $899inc GST
In stock locally and can be shipped to your door within a couple days.

Please see my thread in the sponsors section, I am now representing 42DD in Australia. I have those dumps in stock but haven't confirmed R fitment as yet. Please see my website for delivered to your door prices on all the 42DD exhaust range. I would highly suggest ceramic coat, which is indeed both protective, and retains heat better than any bare metal. I do the ceramic coat at 42DD cost price to make it as appealing as possible, and it is fully coated inside as well as outside which sure impressed me.

To give credit where credit is due Tims dumps are great value if you have to have stainless!

I've had the 42DD ( street: catted, ceramic coated, resonated) 3" downpipe on my stage 2+ Pirelli GTI for about 9000km now.
Awesome piece of kit - one of the things I'd happily buy over again for the performance it adds (with a tune).
Especially since Greg sells the stuff cheaper than I managed to get mine into the country!

IMO stainless steel is overkill in this country. Makes sense in the States / Europe where they salt the roads, but heat management should be more of a concern here.
The ceramic coating more than makes up for the material differences and keeps the heat out of your engine bay.
That is something I think is more relevant for our climate.

Mine mated up to the OEM back section without a hitch.
Releases some more sound but isn't obnoxious or prone to drone.
I can't fault it - great bang for your buck.

Bit of a thread dig.. Just a question regarding resonating, for both the 42DD and Eurojet.. Is non-res much louder than res? And am I right in saying that res isn't much different to stock?

              Thanks

No Polo's in America to fit one to.... Shame though, they'd sell heaps.

Only APR do one off the shelf in Australia, not 3 inch. You'd have to go to Europe, Milltek( not 3 inch but probably most popular), Blueflame no cheaper than custom made here but 3 inch.

There's an argument that 3 inch is over the top for a standard turbo.

I've fixed a couple of Polo GTI APR dump pipes, not too bad a construction, just some design flaws for the price that lead to cracking. I'd prob go the Miltek as its bloody good value for money!
