Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • PRV Operation (when siplifying PCV system)

I'm working on my 1.8T, looking to install a catch can, etc.

The PRV (Pressure Regulation Valve) is sometimes referred to as a hockey puck and inserts into the TIP.

The Crank Case fumes are drawn / pushed through the piping, through the PRV into the Intake. The issue is, the fumes carry water and oil vapour, so in theory you are pulling some bad stuff back into the Turbo / Intercooler/ Intake, etc.

I removed mine today whilst planning the Catch can operation and found that air flowed freely in both directions. There was some restriction to the flow when sucking from the TIP end, but it slowed the flow rather than stopped it.

So exactly how does it work and why is it there? Does it sound like my PRV is faulty?

When installing a catch can and keeping the feed back to the intake, can it be removed?

when i had my passat and i did the k04 upgrade there was alot of oil going thru the TIP..and to the cooler pipes and w en the bov went off oil spat out..
Had to put a catch can in and it didnt route back to the TIP. Just from the hockey puck into the catch can.. this was suggested by Seb and car ran fine for the years i had it for..

      Thanks mate.

Working out the role of the vac vs positive crank case pressure is difficult to determine, Many opinions, little science...
