  • GTI 6 APR Carbonio air intake + downpipe..is it worth it??

    Hi all,

Recently I updated my GTI 6 with an ECU upgrade from APR...
Now I am thinking of getting the Carbon Fiber Intake and maybe the downpipe as well.

    My question is firstly:
Just fitting the Carbonio Carbon Fiber Intake, will it make much of a difference in power and if so how much more? also does it have any effect on fuel consumption?? positver or negative??

also, changing the downpipe, is it a waste of time or should I just spend the extra money and get the full system (RSC Performance exhaust?

Plus, are there better products on the market then the above for GTI 6?
    Enough Said!

I dont think you can go wrong with the mods you are considering.

I had the Carbonio done with my APR tune on my TT and it was awesome.

It's not always about what power increase it offers but the throttle response.

Others might be able to give you some more technical details.

If you purchase at least the downpipe, then you will actually have the minimum requirements for 'Stage II'. As part of your purchase of the APR downpipe, you will receive a free upgrade to the APR Stage II ECU.

Although I don't have any performance figures for just that upgrade, the APR site has figures for the Stage I vs Stage II with its optional components (full Turbo Back Exhaust, and Carbino Cold Air Intake).
Stage I is 189kw / 402NM and Stage II with the TBE and CAI is 205kw / 425NM. But it's not just about those pure numbers.

Having had Stage II on my MKV, I would say that Stage II is awesome. Power is available across wider RPMs, the throttle is more responsive (much more than the 'smallish' increases and numbers would indicate), the engine note and induction noise changes, and the driving experience just overall better than Stage I, and quite frankly made a stock GTI seem downright BORING!

As for there being better products. I think there would be different opinions on which aftermarket companies exhausts are better, as with ECUs, but I personally haven't seen a better Cold Air Intake than the Carbino ones.

Whats the sound like with the Carbonio intake? I'd love some nice spooling/induction noise. I've been looking around you tube but have not found any clips which seem to be of any decent quality.

Pop out to Mona Vale & listen to European Autotech's Demo car & hear it for yourself. Good induction noise IMHO

hi guys, just got the apr stage 1 upgrade on the gti mk6. must say, its awesome. definitely noticeable change from stock - engine seems 'livelier', no regrets getting it.

now planning on getting the apr carbonio intake and pehaps install the downpipe later in the year. carbonio filter looks great up close, more impressive than whats portrayed in the photos. think these are out of stock at the moment though, shortage with manufacturing.

special thanks to paul from muller & muller for the install and great service + derek from european autotech who popped in for the install. thanks guys!

Hi EWT. You will feel some difference. How much of a difference really depends on who you ask. You will also hear some difference. Best thing you can do is take a drive to Harding Performance and talk to Guy_H, and I'm sure he'll be able to answer any questions you have, and probably even demonstrate the differences.

The new carbonio seems very good (haven't read any complaints on golfmk6 from the US guys either). That's what I would do next a well as the downpipe system.

Full RSC would be good if you are after a more sporty sound, I'm not sure which I'd get yet.

I checked with Guy and you don't need a new tune for airbox only.

You're not wrong about stage 1, it makes the car heaps more fun .

Do the Carbonio intakes attract more attention when you get your cars serviced at vw? eg warranty issues?

Well... it's big and shiney and made from Carbon Fibre. So yes, it'll attract attention as soon as the hood is opened. Warranty issues? I'm not sure on that one - maybe a mechanic could mention if there is any way a quality air intake could cause an issue with a car that would require warranty work...

They would have to prove the airbox cause the warranty claim as well if i'm not mistaken..
