Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    Hi Gents,

Just a quick one..... How much boost / power can a 1,8lt 20v engine take before you need to change the internals?

  • #2
Good for around 300hp/300lbs of torque. Rods are the weak link.

U can get good quality rods that are well priced fro integrated engineering btw.

        Thanks boyz!

Ive read alot of different stories, good to know the rods are the weak link.

I've read alot of story's of stock long engines making a shade over 400hp, but the tune has to be 100% spot on.

          No errors, otherwise "BANG"

Other than that, the rods are the weakest link & once to start chasing "big power", the exhaust valves can also let go.

As the exhaust valves are sodium filled, they are also hollow. Normal upgrade is to Supertech or Ferrea valves with upgrade Valve springs & retainers

Stock pistons can handle a fair bit of abuse & one of the US 20Vt kings has made 700+hp on stock 20vt pistons & crank.

Just recently also built & tuned a salt lake racer 20Vt for a belly tank I think from memory & also making approx 792hp & 640ft/lbs!

...... Which is why the Polo GTI is so fast.

              correct Timbo,
Bill Brockbanks Ibiza made well into mid 350bhp on a stock motor (IHI turbo) gearboxs was his only problem, engine never missed a beat!!!!

best to work with 150bhp lump as these are stronger than the audi TT 225bhp motors

yer sir, i have a AGU with a GT28rs running 16 PSI - no worries.

                  Actually Velly.

The 225 TT engines are bloody strong also. Both the AGU & AMU (TT 225) 20mm piston pins amongst other components. A few other codes also have the same sort of forged internal's, large port heads such as the AEB etc.

                  The AMU is also 9.0:1.

The 20VT King has made as much as 700+hp on a stock TT block, crank & pistons! (Carillo rods of course!)

                  Not bad I reckon!

i am sure i read in either in The Golf ot PVW some years ago that they said the 150 ones were the best.

i am not saying the TT one isnt, just the 150 ones were stronger.

still, i wouldnt say no to any one of them!!

why is the weakest link always in the rods on vws......
ive heard of vr's its the rod bolts, and yeah in 1.8 20v's its the rods themselves.

Actually in the earlier engines, the rods are stronger than the pistons. Good for over 20PSI. The early formula 2 engines used to rev to around 9500rpm on standard rods.

Rod bolts are usually the weak point in most standard engines. Not specific to VW's.

Try and get the same sort of power out of standard equipment in a japanese make and see what happens..

AGU engines have a good reputation for handling mods. They also have bigger small ends. Rods are the weak link as they are in any engine, up the juice on stds you can come to strife , having said that the AGU is good for around 350+HP i would say. Still its not the power that kills them its the torque. Thats what scares me about Hybrids and spooling up fast. Ive seen banana rods at around 400Nm fo torque. Not pretty and they have a habit of creating extra crankcase ventilation i.e Leg out of the bed. If you are considering going heavy on the mods consider getting the rods replaced, someone has mentioned Integrated, good option.
