Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I dunno much but id say yeah weber would be better.

Manual convertion, i was told would cost about 1000$ for the box and all other stuff needed for the convertion. Ask Golf Loon...hes a gun.

    And 1974....daaaaaamn.

Weld the back doors and fit a cage. Seriously get a manual box in asap and fit a lumpy cam!

yeh converting to manual you will need the pedal box and gearbox the stick shift and the like... shouldnt be too expensive considering people chuck out mk1 Golf 4 speed boxes in favour of the 5 speed

I'd say you would still need the pedal box etc. to complete the conversion but I would imagine the 5 speeder should fit.

You need to hang the pedal off your column if you are lucky, or change the pedal box.

Hopefully it has a manual steering rack with the bracket you need on it otherwise you need to change that too.

You need a different throttle cable that goes straight to the carby, not via the auto like on an automatic.

Finally you need a 4 or 5 speed gearbox. Make sure you get the mount with it as you will need it.

Finally shifter and linkages and you are done.

Its not that hard and its worth it.

Ring gear is heat shrunk onto the flywheel on the manual flywheel, but both aut and manual flywheels will just unbolt.
