Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • exhaust note louder?

what modifications can increase the exhuast note of your car.. how do you make it idle heaps loud (without removing my rear muffler)

i have full 3" straight thru with just a rear muffler at the end which is adjustable..

want it to idle loud or make it sound lumpy on idle

    3" turbo back...

get a sainless exhaust manifold and downpipe?
    get cams for lumpiness.

why dont you just get the hitachi out and make a few gashes up the front somewhere.

or remove a vaccum hose so it doesn't boost and idles erratically.

ulitmate solution, is to buy a V8

Did you buy a branded exhaust system or is it off the shelf style? I believe that an exhaust shop can alter the design for peak power or in your case, better sound.

Adjustable muffler? Have you tried adjusting it? What design is it? Muffler change can make a big difference in performace and sound, but if youv'e already got a full 3", maybe you would be better off with some mods closer to the engine.

AH ok nice. I would say the exhaust mani will get more gas out of your engine (volume and velocity) making more noise. Muffler, get a straight through. My magnaflow with 2 resonators, 2.25" cat back is absurdly loud so I would have thought a setup up like above would be the same.

Cams, longer duration, higher lift. Read up on cam tech, but if you got some say 272 degree cams they will open the inlet valves for longer and higher, letting more air in. It is also a shorter turnaround till they open again, same on exhaust. Will help you get "lumpy".

                HAHAHAHA

well, anyway - your turbo is the worlds most effective, and expensive muffler. remove your turbo, then your car will be loud.

didnt you get defected a while back for too loud exhaust?

My A4 1.8t was quiet and a little boring even with a full three inch turbo back exhaust until i made an exhaust manifold and added a Garrett GT 25/30 and not only did it go great once tuned but the exhaust note was awesome under boost! gldgti is right the stock turbo is the best muffler you can get so upgrade and get the power and the exhaust note to match!

its got a k04, it already wheel spins coz its front wheel drive.. if i had a a4 1.8TQ then i would go bigga..

my exhuast note i already love.. wen the cars moving it sounds like a sr20.. several ppl have asked wot engine i have.. but it just needs a more aggressive idle

ive not had a turbo car myself but a guy at TAFE had a 180sx with a SR20DET which was fair worked. when making the change from stock cams to like Tomie 256* cams, it went from sounding like a jap import turbo thing with the stockies, to sounding like one ballsy, lumpy jap import thing with the cams.
seriously made it sound SO much tougher. and the torque curve recieved a massive midrange boost. basically made it heaps better all around.
ive seen that 256* cams are usually touted as FI cams for most engines, so i imagine they would do similar things to ur 1.8t.

if i had one, it would be one of the first things i would do engine wise after chip
                        -steve

the 256*'s made the idle sound like beating on a drum rather than just a humming kinda noise
