Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • MK 5 GTI Exhaust power gain

I have been searching and have not found dyno readouts of the power gains resulting from a full exhaust upgrade on MK5 GTI's? I was told that a full APR system will yield 9 kw ATW's..... is that all!!!!!?
Can anyone shed some light on this?

Proving that the factory exhaust is pretty good!! No surprise really.

9 wkw with the correct software is about correct! - thats close to 12 crank KW's so its a pretty nice gain

        2 - $3000 for 9kw..... Hmmmmmmm

I guess I am used to gains of 10 - 20kw for example seen on S15 200sx, Evo, WRX's. Have seen dyno runs before and after and this is what I have seen on boosted engines.
I was expecting a little more especially when you consider the squished look of the standard dump pipe not to mention a standard cat converter.
The rear muffler must be pretty much a straight through design on the standard system? Is it?

i think the idea with an aftermarket exhaust isn't so much the peak horsepower gains so much as the greater spread of torque over the rev range.

I'm sure exhaust shops wouldn't have a problem with knocking up a 2.5 inch all the way back.

Just watching the F1 qualifying Mmmmmmm Eau Rouge!!!! Best corner on any circuit on earth Has taken more lifes than cancer!

Yes the exhaust.... I do see what u are saying however if the "peak" kw gain is 9kw at the wheels then i would not expect the torque spread to be a huge gain over standard.

I gather that overeall VW have doen a pretty damn good job with the standard exhaust, i cant justify spending the bucks for gains which seem minor..... unless someone know where there are some online dyno sheets to show the gains

For $3000 dollars im sure the quality of the exhaust would be absolutely excellent but having made numerous stainless steel 2 1/2" and 3" mandrel bend exhaust systems i know how much time would be involved in fabricating a full turbo back system and the costs of materials... I think that a good exhaust shop could do a system of similar quality for around a $1500... With very similar power gains.

For $3k from what i can see the quality is awesome but at the end of the day you are paying a little extra for the "name" on the exhaust.
I would agree with u and just have a exhaust shop who knows what they are doing to make one up and save the coin.
I would still love to see some dyno sheets showing gains though, dont think they exist... most i have seen are before and after chipping
