Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

The debate has been had loads of times and nothing has changed..... yet.

I don't see guy dropping APRs prices any time soon, unless the tumbleweeds start blowing across his workshop...

I suppose at the end of the day, there are still customers that will pay the price for APR tuning because of various reasons. The others who go with different tuners might do so because of the price difference, or it might just be preference. I don't think that's going to change by the sounds of it! hehe.

Its horses for course really I went down the APR road only after alot of research. I looked at about 6 chipping companies(Including Custom Code, Giac, REVO, Power Chip, and APR).
It came down to what I was looking for at the time.
I wanted it to be undectable.
I wanted it to be switchable.
I wanted it to be able to be locked.
I wanted to have good backing.

I feel I got this in the tune that I chose. I am very happy with it, and it does the job very nicely.

          gotcha.

by the way, are prices listed on websites and such negotiable?
i mean, i've heard that when you get more than one (e.g. exhaust + tune), you can usually get a bargain from the companies.. any idea what type of discount we're talking about? what if i'm only going with one first, but only thinking of getting the other later?

One way to find out man...Ask...It always helps if you mention where you found out about them, of rock up with different quotes to compare. Multiple purchase of products helps too.

i told an APR dealer in sydney (during an email correspondence) that i was going to go elswhere due to the higher cost, and he didn't offer me a cheaper price... but i didn't ask directly (i said "unless you can suggest a good reason to go with APR, i'll unfortunalely have to go to x company"). He either didn't have a good reason, or didn't want the business as he just said no worries mate etc. but yeah im sure they still can. in a thread of mine i asked the same question, and Guy from APR pretty much said the same thing, i.e. if you're getting other work done etc, if you simply ask them they could probably sort something out for you. i mean at the high cost, i'm sure there is a bit of room work with, you'd hope.

I know. I intend to, but it's still the weekend and all are closed, so I'm not going to get the chance till the weekday. Moreover, I've spoken with a couple but as I'm shopping around, I would like to know what others' experiences are. Thanks for the tip though.

I have a very imprtant question regarding the ECU upgrade for the 118TSI

The gearbox fitted to the 118TSI DSG is only maxed out at 250nm

now if the ECU gives 317nm, wouldnt that kill the gearbox

                  post ur expert opions pls

                  thanks

                    It might.

You better not do the upgrade, until you search the MANY posts about how VW rates its transmissions.

Read this thread - http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/newf...ad.php?t=19437 - and see if it answers any of your questions. I had the same question too and I think I have enough information to convince myself that it would be a worthwhile upgrade at some point.

To be honest I would go for another company other than APR if they were available here. Unfortunately the ARP dealer is also VW authorised workshop, so it just makes sense to go do business in the one place.

I think I can now answer my own question - There is a benefit when driving in the same manner with the remap I got.
                          Throttle response.
Now if I quickly press the throttle from standstill - no more pregnant pause. Previously I caught myself out on a couple of occasions when the car paused momentarily from full stop at an intersection when trying to jump into a gap in right angle traffic. This was most disconcerting. Doesn't do that anymore... .. and of course the extra torque and power is most noticeable.
does it consumes more fuel now?

My gut feeling it is that it does use more because of the way I drive it. Is possible that driving it in a identical manner pre and post tune may yield a small fuel saving but cant say I have bother to check and I can afford the fuel.
I tend to push it harder now because it is far more sporty with the tune. It would be such a shame to waste it. Flogging around winding country roads @ 120-130 is so easy to do and a lot of fun. I think my average consumption is a tad over 8ltrs/100km. If I was to drive it to save fuel I could readily get it down to 6l/100, but I prefer to have fun with it. BTW it really is a fun car to drive...

Whats the difference between "quickly press the throttle" and giving it some stick?

IMO its always good to have the power when you need it.
