  • T4 transporter 5cyl power upgrades

    hi all,
i'm a vw imbecile. can anyone tell me of any available power upgrades to a T4 5 cyl engine? i think they are rated at 85kW, and i would like a little more than that.
are there any chip upgrades or similar, before i go and but one for its seating capacity? i don't want turbo etc, just basic tuning advice
    thanks in advance

There are two 5 cyl diesel engines in the T4. The earlier vans [up to 2000 in Aust.] are old school mechanical control & are generally called 2.4 engine & use indirect injection. These do not have a turbo or any computer control.
The later 2.5 Tdi have turbo, ECU & intercooler & are direct injection.
Another 2.5 is the petrol 5 cyl.
Which engine are you talking about?

        There is also a 2.0 4cyl, 2.8 V6 & o/seas two versions of 1.9 diesel.
Hopefully someone will be able to answer your question soon, I have no experience with the petrol engines.

Oettinger "used" to have an upgrade for this model, it has been pulled (too old) - BUT in order for the software to make any significant gains, it required a new camshaft & cylinder head porting which upped the price a fair chunk!

Replace air filter & fuel filter as required. Use OEM or one of the european OEM spec replacement brands (Mann, etc)

Where is the air filter pulling air from? Can you duct some cold air to the air filter inlet?

Oil & filter change. Use decent oil - Castrol Edge Sport 5w-30 is on special at Supercheap for $34 at the moment. Great bang-for-buck. Use a good quality OEM spec oil filter (not Ryco, etc).

Spark plugs? How long have they been in there? Replace with something decent from Bosch, NGK or NipponDenso.

Fuel - try running PULP 98 or 95. Even try some E10(94ron) which will also clean the fuel system.

Buy a litre of Moreys Upper Cylinder Lubricant & use as directed. It will clean out the combustion chambers.

Change the gearbox & differential oils to a quality synthetic.

Pump your tyres up to the factory spec plus an extra 4-6psi.

Buy quality tyres - if you don't have to slow down for a corner then you don't need power to accelerate again.

            Take the roof rack off

Get rid of unnecessary tools & equipment out of the back.

Take the bullbar & rear step off

Have a crap before you drive anywhere.

A good TDI would be good as well.

I have owned a couple of the 85kw 5 cylinder petrol ones, but love my TDI way much better!

off this particular topic now, but what wheels from what models are interchangable with the T4?
