injectors

hey all,

so, my mk4 r32 came back from its service not too long ago, and them wonderful people at volkswagen were happy to inform me that my throttle body needed cleaning and my injectors needed replacing---- and for $350 theyd clean the throttle.... and thats where i stopped them before finding out how much the rest would cost (an arm and a leg?) and went home

so, after taking the 15 mins or so to clean up the throttle body, i started to put some thought into injectors.... it really comes down to should i stick with stock? are aftermarket squirters gonna make much difference?

and are they very pricey?

Ive got brand new ones here if you wanna buy em , although I'd love your old ones to see whats actually wrong with them

I know FSI's have injector problems , never really heard of issues on R32's though

Take it to a fuel injection specialist and have them cleaned ultrasonically. I'd be surprised if they'd died already unless you have been pumping bad fuel in consistently... or have lapped Australia several times!!

i always use bp ultimate- or anything 98 octane if i cant get to bp-
and its done about 50,000ks.

when it comes down to it, last time i took it vw they told me i needed a new headlight assembly, which was apparently broken ($1500 for the part) that just turned out to be unclipped and needed a new cover.
so really im in doubt whether they really are burnt out- or if theres anything wrong at all!

surely if your injectors were stuffed you'd notice the performance of the motor drop off dramatically??

Not necessarily - it's difficult to detect even large changes when they occur in small steps over a large period of time, and that's the way injectors tend to go - gradually gumming/blocking up over a period of time.

yeah i guess if you are used to it as it is happening it would be hard to spot unless they suddenly clogged up...
isn't there an additive you can use in the fuel tank to help clean them up? or would they now be beyond cleaning without removing them??
50,000ks seems a little early to me. what service interval do they get replaced?

Which dealer did you go to Chris?

Quattros did my throttle body service for $85 about 12-18mths ago. Granted it has started playing up again but it's a common fault with Mk IVs. They estimated a new unit would be about a grand so I'll keep dealing with it for a while longer (unless anyone can tell me it's going to cause other problems or damage down the line).

I'd suggest speak to them about the injectors. Don't think anyone here has had a bad word to say when it come to their servicing.

What I meant (sorry, I just realised it was pretty unclear) was that you may have got a bad batch of fuel, whether or not it was high octane stuff. It's pretty unlikely, but could clog or break down the injectors - generally you'll notice cold start or other problems aswell, though.

Sometimes you do go just get a dud set, though. A FJ20T Datto that comes into my work had new Siemens injectors and never ran right - we flow tested them and they were all over the shop; as in, one only passed about 380cc. The car has a clean fuel cell and three filters, so the fuel system wasn't at fault either - just dud injectors.

VW should at least explain why you need them, though?! In any case, if it does come to buying some, just email a dealer in the UK, provide your VIN and they'll be far cheaper than here.

hey again, sorry bout the late reply!

i bought the dub at osborne park vw, and have had it serviced there ever since

when the told me the injectors where stuffed, they just said it needed to be done but with no price--- but where happy to tell me the throttle would be cleaned for $$$. which seemed a little silly to me- ive sorted any cleaning probs with my vws before myself, so i just did it again.

as for performance notes, it does hop a bit sometimes, and it does act a bit different depending on the weather- but dont all cars?
any lagging on accelerating goes away when the esp is turned off tho----

i think its time to take it somewhere else than ozzie park!

ive finally got a day off today, so i might drop into golfwagen.....
