  • Torque Ratings

When you're given torque rating for certain things..
Head Bolts, Conrod Caps, Camshaft caps...

Is it bad if you over torque??

I have a torque wrench, but 15nm for camshaft caps seems fairly loose...

    Will that rattle loose??

No, stick with the readings. VW know more than anyone about what torque things should be and you should never stress studs or bolts otherwise they will come loose due to a stretch bolt/stud.
For instance (and I apologise for this reference) air cooled motors with the 8m/m studs are only done to 18ft/lb each. Providing everything there is machined correctly they don't come loose. Cheers!

Absolutely stay with the manufacturer's torque specs. Ever heard of "bearing crush"?
The only time I ignore VW is when tightening the cam sprocket on a diesel as it's a taper fit and there are many tales of it loosening with disastrous results on an interference motor. My son's lovely and rare Audi 100 diesel suffered this fate.

Just to reassure you & for interest sake.

All BMW camshaft bearing caps with a M7 thread are torque'd up to 14nM incl. all the motorsport vehicles. M3's, M5's etc.
If thats what the manufacturer recommend's, then that's what I'd do it to.

According to my Bentley manual, it says
Camshaft bearing caps to cylinder head (nut)
            8v 20nm (15ft lb)
            16v 15nm (11ft lb)

16 valvers only have 7m/m studs and they do snap.
              8 valvers are 8 m/m studs Cheers
