  • Rusted Brakes, what to do?

    Hey all,

    I've been wanting to paint my calipers lately, but jsut the other day, I've noticed that there
    is a **** load of rust all over my rear brakes.

    Google search tells me this is normal, and comes off when you apply brakes, however that does not seem to be the case for me and I definately want to remove this as it's quite an eye-sore.

    It's a bit late, so I'll update with actual photos tomorrow, but for now, it's something similar to this:

    TL;DR
    Brake discs are rusty, how to restore to normal/maintain it?

      That's annoying... Since I Recently purchased the car, and the RWC included having the rear brakes changed, I have a warranty on the check, would I be able to claim warranty on this?

        Mine will do that overnight... It goes away when you drive the car, right?

        The rust is because of the material the rotors are made of... No big deal

          Go for a drive put brakes on Problem solved. Dont take it out in the rain or wash it and it wont happen again. Mine go like that when I wash it.

              Just added photos to main post.

              I took it for a quick drive and did some braking but its still there, albeit maybe a little less.

              can i take a microfibre cloth or something and try rub it with water or something?

                You worry too much go for a longer drive with more corners needing a bit more braking Every time they get wet they will do that.

                  The rusty part appears to be the hub, not the friction face of the rotor itself. You can wire brush the rust off & paint it at the same time you do your calipers

                      Yes the pads dont rub there do they Use the same high temp paint as you do the calipers with You were going to do that werent you

                        In this photo - the black bit you can paint. The shiny dinner plate part with the slots has to stay shiny. (your's doesn't have slots)

                        Search brake rotor painting and brake caliper painting. There are heaps of you tube how-to's out there

                            I've seen people paint the friction face & rely on the brakes to remove the excess. It works but is also can contaminate the pads & smoke like crazy until it burns off.

                            So at least make a token attempt at masking the friction surface.

                            There was overspray but i wiped most of it off with metho.

                              Alright, thanks for the help everyone !
                              Last quick question, since google is giving me both answers.

                              When painting my calipers, do I need to prime them? Or can i just wire brush them, degrease them, dry and then spray?

                              One of my friends says he just cleaned them up, got the caliper paint, sprayed it into a container and painted it on with a brush. They're still going strong 1 year later too.
