Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Parts arrived for the carbs.

If you're looking for small parts for Dellortos or Webers, EuroCarb in the UK provide an excellent service.

    Dellorto and weber carburettors online

Only took a week to arrive.

    I got
    1. Longer manifold studs
    2. Soft mounts
    3. Thackery washers
    4. New floats
    5. New genuine needle and seat assemblies
    6. Pump actuator rod nuts.
    7. pack of gaskets

Today I installed the soft mounts and replaced the floats and needles.

Longer studs in and loctited in place

Soft mounts, hopefully these will save the needle and seat from some vibration. Should also prevent heat soak from the manifold.

I had to order these two nuts in, the origianals rattled loose and fell out on a race track somewhere.

Non genuine needle and seat on the top and genuine Dellorto unit below.

    Setting up float levels.

Soft mounts in place and carbs secured with thackery washers under the nylocks.

    All back together again.

Just waiting on brake pads to arrive from Summit Racing and it'll be right to hit the track again in August.

    • Off to the Island tomorrow for the final round of the 2011 Victorian SuperSprint Championships.

I'm giving the logger and dash I got for my other car a bit of a test drive.

Here it is temporarily mounted up. I made a rudimentary control panel for it and bolted it to an ashtray I'd already butchered up.

It'll be interesting to see the data. Still a lot of setting up to do.

      • pete, what's the purpose of soft mounts for the carbs? how do you have enough clearance from the firewall?

EDIT: just saw the reason, my bad.

The vibration damaged these parts. There's loads of room between his carby inlets and firewall.

          • Sorry I haven't gotten around to the videos yet. I'm on a very steep learning curve with the logger analysis software.

Should be able to overlay some pretty clever stuff on the next videos.

Just about got it figured out now.

Here's an example of one of the easier to understand screens!

            • Pretty cool the number of options you've got for looking at data.

                • Here's round 2 with some new overlays. Number between the clocks is which gear I'm in. Bar graph is wired to the brake light.

                      • That looks like a very fast track, not many slow corners? Is it good/better to drive on than others?

                        • It's a fantastic track, one of the best in Australia I'm told.

                          Very fast and open.

                            • Had the discs machined this weekend and fitted up some new EBC pads.

The discs were getting a bit groovy as I'd run out of pads at Winton.

                              • Next thing to fix is the extractors (again!) They broke through again at Phillip Island, I've ordered another set from Straight Line.

I'm thinking I'll weld a flang to the outlet to make servicing easier and them get them ceramic coated.
