  • While I was under the car I replaced the front exhaust hanger, I tend to go through a lot of them.

This time I'm trying the updated VW Hangers from the cars with catalytic convertors, these should handle the heat a bit better. They seem a bit tougher all round reallt.

    Washed my socks today!

    • Looks good! Did you pick up any more top-end with the larger chokes?

HEAPS! ( I was just eating dinner before posting up the test drive results )

        So how does it go?

Pulls all the way to 7000 rpm and there's still a little more to be had. Previously power died off by 5500.

Acceleration has improved thanks to the slightly shorter diff and the wavetrac letting me put the power down faster and of course gob loads of extra power.

The Wavetrac works well and will take some getting used to.

Off at the lights I could just give it the lot and it just launched and around corners I couldn't get the inside wheel to spin no matter how hard I tried.

There's something funky about the feedback through the steering wheel which I can't quite describe yet. It's not fighting you but it feels different when you load up the diff.

It's running a couple of degrees hotter than before, but that might just be that I advanced it up a bit to start it.

I'll see if I can get it on the Dyno and retuned.

All I need now is a race track.

        • I notice a difference through the steering wheel comparing my car (Open diff) and Dad's Mk1 with the Quaife

Yeah same with my peloquin, I felt a difference at first too. When you are powering out of a corner it feels like it kind of locks into the turn more, it doesn't want to self centre as naturally. I think this is because the diff is shifting most of the torque to the outside wheel which kind of locks it into the turn a more. You get used to it though.

Thats awesome that it revs better, so much better for the track

            • Hey Pete " pulls all the way to 7000 rpm " now thats more like it. What's the story at the bottom end of the rev range compared to the previous set up?
I'll be interested to see what effect the diff has on the overall handling next time you get it on the track. Good work. .. Cheers Geoff

              • I would imagine the steering doesn't go light when you get on the throttle hard, as it doesn't break traction and power understeer like previously??

Great work Pete. Looks the business. Glad to hear you recovered the top end!

Still seems quite tractable down low, it's actually pretty nice at normal driving rpms.

                            • Lathe plus smaller chokes = bigger chokes... Pete ... Wheel align, well that's another story all together ........ I run a small amount of toe-in say 1 mm or a little less. I've tried the VW setting which I think is a bit of toe-out but I find that it understeers a bit more which is note what you want on the gravel.

Not much good if you want to keep the smaller chokes.. You can't machine it back on! haha.

I've sent you a PM (questions) about front end alignment, Geoff..
