Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Hmmm, I drove it again today to go and wash it for DOVW and the brakes still aren't up to scratch, something more than just fluid is at play.

Handbrake is very high too, perhaps the rear discs have run out of adjustment. I'll have to have a think about it and take another look before DOVW.

    • Ok, just figured something out. The self adjuster on the MK3 rear discs appears to work off the handbrake. I assumed it worked off pedal action.

I don't ever use the handbrake on race days for fear of welding the pads to the hot rotors. I just leave it in gear when it's parked up.

I've just worked the handbrake a bunch of times and it's brought the pedal height back up.

I must have worn a chunk off those pads last week

Might have to pull the handbrake a few times before each race.

Goal is to get motor and box out today at least.

                  Pics to follow.

My understanding is that the Wavetrac product is much newer, and thus still has a smaller installed base. Their differentiation is interesting - no loss of power to the grounded wheel if you get the other wheel off the ground - I don't think Quaif/Peloquin offer that advantage.

I'd love to put a Wavetrac or two into my Bora once they get them developed for the 02M AWD gearbox and rear end. Let us know how you go with it and what you think!
                    Nothing to see here...

                    • Motor's ready to come out after dinner.

Would have been out by now but we went and saw Avatar, it is my holidays after all!

Jodie Brought this back from shopping today, isn't She sweet?

                      Only two bolts to go.

I'm going to need a new outer CV boot, hopefully I can can find one locally tomorrow so I can change it while the motor's out.

                      • It's out now!

I'll work on swapping the head tomorrow. I need to pull it apart first and just give it a clean, and check the lifter clearances. (It's a mech cam).

Decided to hang it on the stand off the back of the block. Just means I don't have to pull the clutch off.

That casting on top of a 5 speed is conveniently right at the centre of gravity which lets you pick the box off the end of the motor without any back strain.

The serpentine belt setup has held up to a year of racing no worries.

Not so quick, I've been timed at 12 minutes to remove the engine from my old splitty Kombi.

I did go to the movies for 4 hours yesterday too.

This motor's a bit fiddly to take out though as there's lots of non standard stuff on it that has to be disconnected or that fouls when you're trying to remove it.

                            Practice helps too.

Ah yes, the old air-cooled motor removal!

Can you remind us again why you're removing the motor? New box and head, but I take it that's easier to do with the engine out? Or are there other fiendish plans in store?
