  • No Pulp Passat Mk1

Ok. So now that this 2L 8v engine conversion has the go ahead I thought I would do a proper, dedicated restoration/conversion thread.

Car is a 1976 Passat LS. Bought 3 years ago for a cool $1000 with 290,xxx on the clock. Had a heart transplant to a golf 1.6L engine 6 years ago. Im the 3rd owner, previous owner owned it for 31 years. Local tassie car.

Im my time of owning it I have done a few things:

    -New headlights
    -Fresh speedo
    -Front wheel bearings
    -Upholstered door cards
    -Upholstered dash in black suede
    -New shift linkage bushes
    -Healthy drop
-BMW BBS Basket weaves 14x6.5 wrapped in Falken ZE912 185/55R14
-Twin 40 webers with Pipercross sock filters
    -Basic two speaker stereo
    -Edead sound deadening
    -Redyed original carpet

Now Im starting the conversion to a mk3 2L 8v. After ordering needed parts for the conversion from techtonics, weberperfromance.com.au and other various sites the fun will begin in the following weeks.

Heres a few picks of how it was to how it is now

    How it was when purchased.

    And how it sits today

---------- Post added at 12:45 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:43 PM ----------

Im trying to sort out what kind of jets I need to run the 2.0 engine while staying with the 40's rather than going 45's.

Pulled the current jets out to see what size they are for curiosity reasons, knowing that no matter what size they are they will most likely have to be change.

    Ok heres the current setup.

    40 DCOE weber
    Primary Venturi/ckoke - 28mm
    Primary Main Jet - 115
Primary Air Correction Jet - 160
    Primary Emulsion Tube - F47
    Idle Jet - 59 F21

Clearly these webers had been set up for quite a smaller engine.

This is the jet route in thinking of taking with a 276 cam

    Venturi/choke - 36mm
    Primary Main Jet - 145
Primary Air Correction Jet - around 190
    Primary Emulsion Tune - F16 - F12
    Idle Jet - 50/55f9

No doubt I will play with a TDI conversion but it wont be with the B1. Certainly is green down here along the coast

Gldgti, mate your timing couldn't of been more perfect. My radiator is leaking slightly from the top tank and it has just about had it. Is the diesel one bigger? Regardless I will PM you

Still have plans for the brakes, the suspension, the body work and the interior still needs a finishing up. But at least the wheels are done hahaha

Parts are starting to collect up.

3 Speco gauges and an Autotech adjustable cam gear From Chris at TPR Engineering.

Also scored a duckbill from Dan which I had to trim slightly to fit the Passat. Photos of it are taken just after fitment. So there still needs to be a bit of tidying up to do. Got my eye on some aftermarket indicators as well. Number plate is bugging me so I will get a slim line version for the front. But you get the idea

Nice score its really neat!! I'm jealous. Thats a rare car now and rarer in that condition!
I prefer it with bumpers and without the duckbill though...
Are you gonna do anything with the E30 wheels (colour??)
Whare abouts in tas are ya?

                Thanks dude

i plan to pu tthe bumper back on but at the moment it will obstruct the number plate and I dont really want to be pulled over buy the police. A slim line number plate will fix that

I was thinking of changing the colour of the basketweaves but I have grown fond of the original look of the wheels.

I received my 2.0L ADY engine and spare B1 passat gearbox late last week

Had some spare time at work today so took the head off for a general inspection then took it home where lives on an engine stand while the work begins.

I was actually surprised at the condition of the head and the bores etc....Supposedly this engine has covered a fair amount of k's. The piston tops have very low carbon built up. The water jackets in the head and block arnt too bad at all and the bores still have honed markings on them.

Current plans are to strip the block, inspect the pistons, bearings, rings etc and then take the block and pistons to our local engine re-builder so he can measure the bores and pistons and tell me if I need to go over-sized or just new rings

While the engine was a work I fitted a welsh plug to one of the crankcase breather holes and will make up a plate for the other hole just bellow the engine number.

36mm is a big choke in a 40 DCOE. It may not be pleasant to drive. I wouldnt go past 34mm. But with a big cam it may not behave below 3500rpm anyway

Change of plans with the head. Had a bit of drama so decided to run it standard with the addition of a techtonics tuning 260 cam and ported and polished exhaust ports.

Still a little to go. More clean up of wiring, sort out coolant hoses and other maintenance stuff.
