  • Oldschool Passat Love

Thought id start a project page on the old girl as a few more things have been done and soon will be done. Nothing extravagant from earlier this year. Its a pretty solid little car. Only problem i had recently was temperamental starting. Pulled the starter motor apart and found plenty of dust which was effecting the brushes in the motor to spring back to place. After an air pressure clean and new brushes it starts, first time every time LOL.

These passats dont look too bad when kept reasonably original, so the plan is to just dump it in the weeds and throw on a steel/wood roof rack (EMPI style). Suspension is a PITA. Apparently various VW/Audi suspension components are interchangeable with the Passat/Dasher. Cars like the 4000, quantum, Audi Fox. Problem is these particular parts are rare in Aus and sourcing stuff from overseas that "MAYBE will fit" is something I cant be bothered stuffing around with just yet. So maybe ill bring out the grinder for a quick fix. But suspension is next on the cards.
    Anywho some pictures.

            Thanks guys. Slowly getting there.

Got tired at seeing the dirty, dusty brown snake like exhaust creeping from under the car, so i got myself a new chrome tip, applied it and then painted the rest of the pipe matt black.

Hopefully there will be some more progress by the end of the week

            cheers

The passat is now Low. . I didn't go crazy but it is a lot lower than it used to be. Better to look at now as well lol.

Removed the head rest. Not quite sure of the look but its growing on me. Guess I'm so used to them on. Looks more retro anyways.

When I removed the head rests in my old 2 door, I couldn't believe how much it 'opened up' the interior! Cool imo!

Looks better, needs to be lower though

I'm used to no headrests! haha.
Definitely removing my MK1's after RWC.

This car is so fresh. Interior looks amazing!
There was a slammed B1 wagon the same colour as this for sale recently, it looked sick really low!
Has a good shape for tucking IMO.

                    Great work mate.
The headrest delete looks awesome, really opens up the interior and makes it look like the Old American landyachts inside.

Loving the steel wheels, just needs to be dropped a little.

                      cheers guys.

The headrest delete has grown on me now. It opens up the interior heaps, and it goes well with VW more glass and daylight approch at thier older models.

Would like to go a little bit lower but dont think I can without being too low. Im not overly proud of the way I lowered it, haha. It is currently a city car with minimal country driving so I gave it a short term, quick drop while I work out a coilover system.

                        Ok so another little update.

The wood grain trim on the dashboard had faded and left if looking pretty darn average. I got some home decor vinyl contact wrap and covered all the existing trim pieces. I decided to go with the wood grain style again as I like OEM and the old school look. Also a lighter brown to somewhat match the seats.

Excuse the camera phone quality. You cant really see the wood grain. The new vinyl also has a textured wood feel. I'll bring out the SLR when its a nicer day down here in Tas.

                          That looks real neat!
Such a pity about these ****ty dashboards though. PITA to fix, but it would be worth it!

Very tidy Passat mate, love the mods so far, keeping it pretty OEM
Headrest delete and drop in height has made the world of difference!
