  • STOIE's - 77' MkI Golf - Build thread

I will try to lay this thread out like a diary as my project continues, so here is where it begins:

As many of you know, I have been hunting for a MkII or MkI golf for quite some time now...
Good thing is after so much searching and so much waiting, I have finally purchased one!

It is a 1977 MkI Golf GL
    General specs are:
    1.5L Petrol
    Silver
Appears to have very little rust and panel damage
    Immobiliser Fitted
    Alarm Fitted
    Remote central locking Fitted
    Everything else stock

I phoned the lad named Anthony on Tuesday night after Gotrice posted it and another MkI from Canberra up in the Cars forsale section. It is rare to see one MkI/MkII here in Canberra nevermind two!
Anyway, yesterday afternoon, I went past Anthonys place after speaking...
The car looks great and drives well except for a low idle issue.

Anyway, we made a deal about 20 minutes later and we agreed on $1200, not to bad for a car in it's condition me thinks
Anthony said he had the car 18 months and learned to drive in it, before this it was owned by other Canberran's and believes it has been here it's whole life! (Probably why there is so little rust!)

But, before I go on too much I will say I pay for it and pick it up this afternoon, so should have some pics for you all in no time.

So thrilled to finally be onboard!

Okay so I picked up the car this afternoon, has some idling issues as I said and it boiled a bit in the 1hr of peak hour traffic on the way to my mates place...
Anyway, it is what it is and now the work can shortly commence...

It was a fun and interesting drive... but left me imagining how different the car will no doubt be when I am finished with it.
Anyway, these are not my pics as it was dark when I got back, but these were taken by the previous owner Anthony yesterday.

      Enjoy!

            Yeah, that's better.

Tint doesn't suit MK1's at all in my opinion. Otherwise it looks pretty good and at least you've got some nice bumpers!

should be a GLS, we never got GL's here I believe.

IIRC the S was the difference between having a 1.1/1.3 and a 1.6.

Will have to look closer in the daylight over the next few days.

                            Nice one Aaron.

Not sure you'll ever get a Mk1 to drive like a modern car though. And, in some ways, it'd kinda defeat the purpose of getting an old car.

Anyway, all the best with the build.
