  • Passat mk1 Retro resto

My 1976 Passat LS. Previous owner had owned it for 31 years! Saw it a 'dealer' for $1000 about 1.5 years ago and have had it as a second car ever since.

Its in pretty good nick for its age. It has a few problems like a couple of dents and home job patchup work on the body, slipping clutch when hot and speedo reading 140kmph when its actually doing 110kmph. Apart from that, the engine is strong thanks to the previous owner rebuilding the engine, interior is very neat and seats still very comportable.

Now that the VR6 is basically sold, this will be my daily driver as I will now have a motorbike for the thrills.

Plans for this little baby is to lower it.... hahaha
Hoping to find some sort of suspension setup for her as i would like to revert it back to standard without too much drama.

    Oldskool euro wheels. 14-15".

Empi style roof rack. (Thin chrome metal frame with wooden polished slats) If anyone has one or knows of one for sale PM me!

Clean up interior and play around with the body with vinyls etc.... Have a few ideas

Anyways It feels great to be back in a 70's Volkswagen. I will definately miss the comfort of the VR, not to mention the power, the sound, the handling, the looks..lol...

    Cheers
    Eric

Ok. First step was to fix that ugly parcel shelf.

Bought some black carpet and a can of adhesive glue from Autobahn and got started this arvo.

Ripped the old one and used it as a template to mark up the new carpet. I doubled layered the carpet to give it some thickness as I wasnt able to use the original carboard/hay whatever they used in the 70's lol.

Cleaned up the metal surface and test fitted the carpet. Then glued both sufaces and placed it on. Not as easy as it sounds because of the different layers of the parcel shelf and the glue being hell tacky. A few colourful words later and its in place.

Thinking about putting speakers in But im struggling to find decent speaker grills from the 70's. Gotta keep it retro

      finished product.

Yea its not too bad Jarred. headlining is starting to show its age with brown mold working its way to the centre of the lining. Dash is a bit cracked. Seats are in great nick. And still very comfy hahaha

                  That looks tops man.

Did you give it a polish? It might come out like new!

                  Looks like it has potential.

                  Anyway, keep it up man.

The paint isnt too bad for a 33 year old car. I had polished it once since i have owned it. Will have to get some some more polish at hit it again.

                    She has got potential

                      yeah dude!

maybe even cut it down with some 3000 before polishing to get the max result.

have you also tried the wax after the polish? makes a massive difference.

                        That looks great man!
I've actually been eyeing an old white one here with a rebuilt Audi 1800 in it. Its not as neat as yours by a longshot, but I might need it to use while the conversion is happening with my mk2.
I was thinking the same as you. Decked, but more rat.

Keep the pics coming tho!! It's nice to see something a bit different for a change

That is lovely and look to be in darn good nick for its age, nice pickup, and especially for that price, bargain!

Look forward to seeing it after some droppage and retro styling

Never tried waxing it after a polish. To be honest im a bit new with cars with older paint work. My VR6 had newish paint and I had my black mk1 repainted so Im not really sure what polish is best...

So I think I have found the type of wheels that would look pretty sweet on the passat. Little bit of work to fit but.....oh so worth it

I have always been a fan of OEM+ and these ATS Porsche Cookie Cutters are perfect.
