2.0 8V into Mk2 GTI?

Could this work?

Both cars are auto, would it mate up to the older Aus delivered 1.8 8V GTI gearbox or would a different box be required, its a Mk3 CL spec 2.0 the 85 kW one(I think??). How much work would this take beyond the actual swap...like mounts, loom etc, what can/needs to be carried over?

Are you intent on keeping the Auto. I'd convert to manual. Get both cars side by side or at least take it all off yourself so you know where things go.

Is the MK2 a late model Aussie one. That will make the electrics easier.

Gold Loon would have more accurate answers. The other possibility would be to just fit the 2 litre bottom head under the 1800 head. Use the mk3 exhaust manifold and downpipe though.

It would be auto for a while just to get it going, seems like the 1.8 is pretty had. The car is a '90 or '91 big bumper, must have been one of the last... has a 'sportz' sticker on the side... nfi.
It's a mates car, we'd (I would just help where I could, I'm not a useful mech) only do it if we could keep costs right down, if there's too much messing around then the original 1.8 could just get work done but at this stage it's not looking too promising for an easy fix and I have no plans for the 2.0L engine and don't want to keep much off it at all.

For the price of a headgasket kit, you could fit the 2 litre and have the 1800 ECU run things.

I'd fit the 2 litre downpipe and get an exhaust manifold off Golf Loon. He must have a proper GTI one not the strangled Jap sepc item.

mk 3's came with single point inject 1.8 not 2.0.. do you have a CL donor or a GL??

I'm pretty sure it's 2.0, I'll look for an engine code. So yeah, GL... sorry mixed that up.

2.0 (GL) Block will bolt to 020 gearbox. Auto should do the same.

2.0 head is different to 1800. Inlet manifold ports are different shape.

2.0 block is 1cm taller than 1800/1600.

1800 head will bolt to 2.0 - use late model metal head gasket and new bolts.

MK3 dual downpipe exhaust and manifold is the way to go, might need suitable cat as well. Cat comes from another model, which one I don't recall.

So, as said above, keep the 1800 head and all your efi stuff attached to it and just swap in the 2.0 block underneath it.
