  • rotary engine?vw. any ideas

would anyone have any ideas or advice about droping a mazda rotoary engine in a golf.....

From memory not possible as the right hand side driveshaft would need to pass through the motor (assuming you're attempting to use the golf gearbox)

Rear mounting may be an option but of course that wouldn't work either as the Golf would just die of shame.

It would require an awful lot of work, almost everything would need to be changed.
In reality not worth it unless you have deep pockets and enjoy throwing money away.

        yes it could work.

you could find a super rare toyota corona gearbox and run it FWD, or cut out the floor and custom fit the mazda driveline into the golf, as an RWD config.

both options, are generally, considered too much work/effort/money. Both would take alot of custom fab work with mounts, driveshafts, cv's etc etc

I've thought about it once or twice after my last two cars before the golf were rotaries.

Would be an awesome project to pull off that's for sure.

Anything is possible just depends on how deep your pockets are, and how much fabrication you can do yourself...

Ive got a couple of rota's and Id love to see someone do this!

i just asked my mechanic about this the other day. it can be done he said. the golf gearbox is no good but he said the older beetles have a gearbox that an adapter would work on and might actually hold up. obviously there is a lot of other stuff that has to be done but the gearbox is one of the major hurdles.

imo this would be an awesome thing to try. i have had 2 other cars converted to a rotary when i was younger 75 mark II corona and a small 323 hatch. both flew but as most other people have said, it cost me a fortune!

                      Rotary in a Golf

Seems like a lot of work myself...but I have seen a rotary in an early Kombi...but of course thats a different concept altogether.

I'm still in love with the Renesis rotary engine.

In the RX8, the compact size of the rotary means that the engine sits low and is right next to the firewall. The engine location also means that its behind the front axle line.

Engine is also super smooth all the way to 9750 revs. IT sux on fuel consumption though.

It is not the quickest car in a straight line, however it can keep up with cars with 2 to 3 times the engine capacity on track (laptime). In a track like Winton, it goes extremely well.

German invention in a Japanese car. Sounds like a great combination.

Anything's possible with the right amount of money!
Do it FR. Hack up the engine bay, make a trans tunnel down the middle of your floorpan, be prepared to have a sump lower than just about everything else!
It would be worth it I think. Mr. Wankel would certainly be proud.

                              do you own a dub????haha.

i think it would be a lot of work for something that would be relatively hard to do anything much with. it'd be HUGE to try and register a car like that, and probably even worse to find a class to track it in. that leaves drag racing
