and apparently an air lift is a good way to do this too, Greg from Autohaas in thornleigh NSW (great guy btw really knows his stuff) said that placing a vacuum on the system then sticking the hose into a coolant container is also a great way to avoid air traps, but there expensiveLast edited by tommymac; 02-05-2009, 10:40 PM.90 GTI Mk2 1.8t soon to be with GT28rs

Test the thermostat too while it's out. Just pop it in a coffee mug and pour boiling water over it.

Block off the overflow hose from the radiator and just have the one from the top hose.sigpic Camden GTI Performance. VW / AUDI Specialists

Testing the pump is easy mate, just rev it up squeezing coolant hose and you should feel a good pulse and the hose should try and swell in your hand. Only test for these im afraid. You mention you fitted and new one with metal impellar, so be rare if that were to be shot. Yes this is the way Mk2 rad sit for sure. If that stat is stuck shut it wont circulate , havent heard anyone ask if your coolant pressure cap is ok?????

Guys thats not an AGU piccie, looks very 2.0ltr Mk5 and look where the battery is, hope im not splitting hairs, not intentional i just clicked onto this tonight and this is what fresh eyes see
On the AGU you really should feel a decent pulse when you give it a rev up mate, thats how i test them and has proven 100% results.
On porsches we had to vac down the system and vac fill as they would never bleed, but they run front to rear and holds around 12ltrs of coolantthe vac fill is REALLY good, i was going to get one made up, pirtek could make one easy, its just a manifold with a tap. I know you shouldnt need to on this car but back in the day the 5 cyl Audis were awful to bleed and had to jack up at the rear so the air would bleed to the header easier, worked well then. The way this all looks and not a good pulse i would be really suss on that water pump.
Good luck with it mate.Alba European

All fixed! thanks to my mate chris!
so the trick we did was to drill a tiny 1 mm hole is the stat to stop the air banking up against it we also filled the rad from them top hose then we fed the rest through the expansion tank.
did the trick, the thermostat now opens at say 88 degrees and thank god my thermos have enough juice to bring the temp down at idle.
bloody gauge inside the car reads 110 thought that was to hot for these motors but maybe the qpeng is no calibrated right with the mk3 CTS.90 GTI Mk2 1.8t soon to be with GT28rs

Funny was going to mention add a jiggle pin hole, but never as they dont normally need that, but with your set perhaps and obviously so. That was the main reason for a jiggle pin was to bleed. Glad to hear you have a result mate
