Well the time has come for one of my rocco's to be given a re birth...Managed to pick it up for $300 back in 2001...however it had to be stored up in Bindoon ( Brackie territory) for a few years..



The weather was really starting to get to the bodywork, so it has become a necessity to git er done NOW...

Had it trailered down early last week, then me and one of my sons began the task of stripping it down to a bare shell.





The plan at present is to have it blasted early december ( the bare shell) still thinking about doing a caustic dip yet, may wait and see how much tin worm is residing on the underside yet...

I have some better front guards, NOS bonnet, good used doors and a decent hatch to fit from the parts collection..as pretty well all the bolt on panels have had the S**t kicked out of them...

There is some areas of rust, the worse so far being the rear of the roof where the hatch seal lives... perforation....


Still have'nt decided what powerplant / trans combo to fit yet, I have a few at hand...

Whatever goes in It needs to be easy to re register as I cant BF with all the "engineering" details for doin a high HP set up to keep it legal ..

is that a 1.8T sitting there? go for the 1.8T is recon but it'd prob be more work?

Got a bit of work there Grant. Might as well put a crazy motor in there if you are gonna do a full rebuild.

The RTA have changed the rules in Sydney again, so that any engine other than the prefix that originally came with the car requires engineering. So even if you put a later 1.6 into a 1.6 Golf, you should get it engineered!

If the Scirocco is a private import it doesn't matter.

The engine pefix rule has been in for 30 years. Sometimes they stick to it and sometimes they don't.

I think they have tightened it up. My blue slip guy wouldn`t register one recently for that reason, so I went elsewhere and they ended up loosing their blue slip licence! May not have been my fault, but may have been

The private import thing is interesting, My Mk2 rocco is a personal import and I wanna chuch the old 1.6 carby motor and stick in something more tasty, but I want to avoid engineering. I`m gonna do more research then.

Yeah, needs a lot of work, but out of all the cars I have it requires the least...if u get my drift..

Engine choices are 1.8 T aww ( 150 HP), 1.8 16 V (KR), 1.8 8v (DX) or 2.0 8v (2E)

Trans choices are O2A, O2J, O2M ( 6 speed), O2O Close ratio or wide ratio.

for the minute thinking the KR and either the O2A or J cable shift. Will be looking at a seqishift selector..

got 280 front vented discs and a rear disc set up ...

well usually anything other than the same displacement or number of cylinders requires "engineering", but i have yet to get confirmation from the coppers here in the west.

Tell them VR6s were an option.

You can do that if it is a fresh import, but once it has been registered with an engine in NSW, I reckon you would have to engineer any changes.

Or get a number stamp kit

How do they know what size engine a KR (eg) is? If it wasn't sold in Australia they don't know.

You can put any optional engine in.

I know a guy here in the ACT who recently registered a MK1 Rocco with a crazy injected 1.8KR (quad throttle boddies, aftermarket ECU, race buckets, fibreglass front end, more crazy stuff like that but I too lazy to type it) and he told the RTA that it came factory with a injected 1.8 (when they only ever came out with a 1.5) and they said, "...uh...OK" coz they are too dumb to know any better and there is no doco on Roccos that they can say is "Official" and its now registered and scares everything else off the road. Ha hah.

I think most if not all Mk1 roccos were 1.6 or less syncro. The changeover year for Scirocco Mk1 - 2 is 1981 and I reckon they save the 1.8 for the updated cars.

I would've done that conversion if it wasn't for the cost of them!!!

For my transplant, all i required was a receipt for the motor, and I.D, and my rego went from 2E to ABF...

How original are you making the rocco?
Daily drivable or more show car style???
