  • Mk 1 Auto to Manual

I have just completed this conversion so thought I would share my experinces.
Its not as simple as I thought, certainly not a weekend job.
You will obviously need a manual box and linkages, but less obvious:
a starter motor from a manual
a steering rack from a manual
a steering column from a manual

The steering rack has the brackets for the gear linkages. A good time to replace the boots and repack with grease though.

The steering column has the clutch mechanism and the bits don't just bolt on as I had hoped. The most difficult part in replacing the steering rack is removing the two shear pins/screws at the top of the column - no head on the screws.

I have done lots of Mk 1 jobs, replacing gearboxes, engines, tanks, but this one is up there with the most frustrating. All good now though with lots of gears.

once you have done it you could easily do it in a weekend if you have the parts on hand, the trick for the shear headed bolts is to grind a small slot in them with a thin grinding disc and then use a screw driver to get them out.
