  • 1.8t sawp - gear box 020 or 02a

    SO I have the Dilemma,

I am almost done on my 1.8t swap. ( no pics sorry it hush hush )

I sent my clutch to Jim Berry In QLD he has a great rep for building **** hot clutches. Plus I will have support if anything goes pear shaped. Before you ask I searched everywhere for a heavy duty clutch and no one could be bothered to help me, wankers.

Any way i guess im worried that i might fork out 800 for a clutch only to have a the O20 mash its self in a blaze of glory.

so do i say bollocks to it and source a 02A and convert it to cable or do i use the O20?

any input would be great ( i have never drove a mk3)

ACS in Adelaide can do uprated clutches for 02A and probably 020 boxes. I think if you plan chipping the ECU then an 02A or J is the way to go.

An 020 will probably be ok with 150hp.

Are you fitting this in a MK3? I'd be looking to convert it with manual VR6 parts.

You might be able to use mk4 GTI parts as alternatives. The 02A and J are externally identical as far as I can see. I have one of each in the garage at the moment.

On the QPENG website, Ben Leech is running his AGU MK2 with a standard 020 GTI Box.

All 020s are not created equal. I`m using one with my 20VT Scirocco, but its from an early Mk3 Turbo Diesel, so is strong as.

I have a few diesel boxes and some budget 02As if you wanna go that route.

        Post some pics mate.

I was forgetting the diesel box. They used them with G60 conversions too. Gavin

They are 210mm but have a larger input shaft than the mk2 GTI box. Make sure you get the right disc.

Actually, a lot of the Diesel stuff uses the smaller input shaft? I know not why.

You can use an uprated GTI clutch Tommy and a Mk2 or 3 Flywheel.

I used a SAACHS heavy duty GTI clutch and Mk3 CL Flywheel and TDI box on the Rocco.

I have a spare TDI box that I was keeping for the Rocco that you could prise off me for $800 or so

020 wont last long with a heavy duty clutch behind a 1.8t . If it does then you drive Miss daisy around . Invest in an 02J gearbox , even if it costs more

Having broken half a dozen 020 gearboxes not driving like miss daisy, i am inclined to agree with bug_racer. Go the 02A, 02J route and enjoy the smoothness of the cable change aswell as the reassurance that it will take the punishment...

i agree with loon that the input shaft size is not necessarily bigger on the diesel - i've never laid eyes on a bigger one in the 020 than standard, and my mk3 CHD trans is the longest 020 you can get (as far as i've found).

as for gears, if you can get it to 7500rpm in 5th, you'll be doing 300kph

My recent 020 clutch discoveries are-

Two types of 210mm disc are available. They're usually sold as 8v or 16v. 8v ones have the smaller input shaft spline and the 16v ones have the larger diameter spline. I haven't worked out the gearbox codes yet.

You can use a 16v pressure plate with an 8v disc for a cheap HD option in an early box.

The 210mm flywheels are a lot lighter than the 190mm flywheels.

I also learnt that applying liberal amouts of gearbox oil to the clutch disc somewhats limits it's usefullness.

                              Pete
