  • golf 3 2.0 into T4 2.0

the 2.0 in my T4 transporter has crapped itself.
I'm looking for the cheapest possible method of keeping it mobile.
I've heard of this conversion being done.
Anyone have any experience in this changeover?
    Is it relatively straight forward?
Do I need the ECU as well?
    thanks in advance.

The engine is not as strong as the T4 one, but should work.

I have a T4 bottom end on the floor here if you want a cheapy. PM me.

maybe you can run the intake and exhaust of the t4 and see how it goes, what is wrong with your van motor ? might be rebuildable

I heard a rumour that it goes nearly as strong as a 2.5.
        maybe a bit of fiction?
top end of mine is stuffed.
has extremely low comp. on #3
I was told it would cost more to repair than to replace, so looking for transplant options.

The 2L Van engine is strong. Probably more durable than the 2.5.
You could just use the Golf head, but it will be stuffing around.
I`d just get your head rebuilt, valves reseated and skimmed, put it back on and smile. Probably cost $500 or so at a good machine shop.

may aswell change the rings aswell , you should do a leak down test and find out where it is losing comp on 3cly , rings, valves, headgasket etc.

there's a complete golf 3 2.0 on egay at the moment for $350.
any ideas on what I would pay to get it installed?

From what I have read it's not just a matter of slipping it in. IIRC it's something to do with the different mounted angles of the respective engines, sumps, oil levels etc.
Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.

Youd need to swop over the sump, oil pickup, inlet and exhaust manifolds and engine mounts, plus clutch and lots of labour dismantling and reassembling your van.

Ir just repair your motor in situ and save a packet.

Find out if it is rings or head gasket and go from there.

Also update your location, makes it easier to help you.

I am thinking it is cracked rings and scored bore.
It has already had a heart transplant apparently, Looks loke an Audi 80 engine, or similar.

engine block is different...dosnt bolt to the gearbox...from memory when I want to do same thing (give up on the end)......just rebuild old one or use some good botom end if your one is not good ( in this case from golf loon if is ok) and fix your head in any machine shop for couple hundred (i dont pay even that afther few times dealling with same guy)...
                          Cheers

Thats a 3A Audi shortblock motor, not a long block T4 lump with more torque and strength. Probably why it has died.

I have a tried and tested T4 2L bottom end for $350 and $50 delivery.
