The early GTI had 90mm CV joints, the later(after the Golf GTI ceased production) Scirocco and mk1 Cabriolet had 100mm CVs which are obviously stronger.

can you describe where you measure the 90 or 100mm ?
I think I might have had a break through - I found a how to video for changing brakes on an 89 vw fox, and it looks like what I am after, along with the front cv joints that I will use on the rear
thats my best guess so far.
BUT
I still cant find the damned carriers to suit, and without them.......
Can you get us the part numbers off the brakes pads themselves? We might be able to cross reference them that way and work out what the callipers are off.
