  • Mk1 Suspension

    Hey guys,

Just wondering what i should do about suspension.

I'm building a 2 door mk1 tarmac rally car, and i'm undecided on what coilovers and bars i should run.

Any tips or personal experience? I don't want to spend more than 5 bills a corner if i can help it.

    Thanks guys!

    Preeny.

    Mk1 race suspension

Hi there, i am using GAZ suspension imported from England, fully adjustable for damping and ride height, cost around $2000 for the set front and rears. They totally transform the cars handling. For bars i use Whiteline who are in Sydney.Their bars are very effective and reasonable cost. Hope this helps.

Hey Pete, thanks for the reply. Is your car a street car or for competition? So you say you use whiteline roll bars? I'm going to make my own strut braces and i'm going to put a cage in the back.

      Where is GAZ available from?

      Thanks,

      Preeny.

This was my setup in my mk1 gti

KW V3 coilover's - Unfreaken believable (Height, compression & rebound adjustable) I'd have to check for what I set everything at.
ABD 25mm hollow front swaybar kit
ABD 28mm hollow rear swaybar kit
Neuspeed front top & bottom stress bars
        Standard VW bushes
Standard 14x6" Pirelli P Slot wheels
        Toyo RA1 street/race tyres 205/55R14

Wheel alignment set with standard toe & -1 degree of camber.

This setup on the street for everyday use was way better than I could have imagined. Nearly rode as good as my brother's mk5 gti. Even he said that once he went for a ride. Only down side was with the front swaybar fitted, it would be alittle noisey when going slow due to the very hard bushes. But it's only a 5 minute job to remove or refit. Don't really need this on for street use.

On the track it was ballastic. Full stop. Didn't pitch, roll nothing. The KW's really come into there own on the track & stiffen right up when pushed.

I did tarmac events in "Gunter", my old Mk1.
Finished 8th outright in Rally Tasmania in 2003.
I ran revalved Bilstein shocks, 440lb micro coils in the front and 270 rear. Whiteline front and rear swaybars and also the stock GTI rear. Front upper and lower braces. No rocket science as it was all I could afford due to family.
There are others down here that reckon it was all wrong but they have a hell of a lot more money than me and really, the proof was in the pudding with the road event success I acheived. There wasnt any other Golfs out there trying to knock me off!!
Cheers, and all the best of luck with it, Andrew

Thanks for the detailed info, worx.

KW's were the suspension i was looking at.. Factory VW uses them so i figured they had to be good.

Where did you buy them? Are they available in aus or did you have to import them from europe?

Any other info you could give me would be much appreciated.

                  Re GAZ Suspension

Sorry, Just got around to reply,my car has been built for Tarmac Rallying also but with the view of doing also hillclimbs and supersprints etc.
Suspension is availabe from Vic and Andrew Spiteri in Blackburn melbourne, but can probably tell you if there is an agent closer to you.
They build and race Jaguars for Targa's etc
                  I found them very helpful.
V&A Spiteri Jaguar is a family business located in Blackburn, Victoria and has been specialising in all aspects of Jaguar for almost 40 years. In that time we have developed numerous modifications to suit all Jaguar models.

These guys do some great suspension for race cars and they race themselves and have developed it all in house. They will ship to oz and their pricing is really sharp. MMI gave them two thumbs up when he fitted some of their gear to his tarmac car.

MK1 floG soon to have 16v 2L with cable change gbox - need a 16v turbo manifold

"Fit the gearbox ya bum." Loon - best post ever!

I have a buddy who runs a shine racing service suspension. It is no joke. The will not let you order without talking to them first, they want everything to be correct for your car and use. They are serious.

When its time for me to buy its between them and the KW suspension.

A great budget setup is Koni Yellows and ground controls.

Tell your buddy to hook me up with a good price then.

Just checked out their website, they look like they know their stuff.

I got quoted 2800 for the KW V3's, and that's in Australia. The Shine racing website is currently under construction, so i couldn't see what they had, but i will check them out after christmas.

I've heard great things about KW but not much about these other guys, so i will have to talk to both parties and see.
