Mk1 Golf Cams class eligibility

Im going to build a turbo diesel Mk1 track car and would like to know what classes this car would fit in. Ideally I would like a historic category so I could enter the Tarrengower hill climb next year. I have contacted Cams and they said "no way" to TD golf in class Sc and pointed me towards improved production class. Are there any other classes that this car would fit into? The car in mind is a 1978 four door with a 1.6TD motor.

WOuld the 1.6TD motor be a problem? The Mk1 was sold with this motor in the US and Europe.

Cams dont really have much of a cluse when its comes to TD.

There is a multiplying factor of 1.7 for petrol turbo cars and FIA rules are 1.5 multiplying factor.

So remember your engine capacity goes 1.6x1.5 = 2400cc. Bringing you in under 3ltr.

It also depends on what clubs you have and what their own internal classes are (for example a 'historic' car is pre '72 according to the vscc of WA & they have heavy restrictions on some events they organise but some hillclimbs are open to all cars). Some clubs and categories allow for some mods and conversions if they were factory offerings, but other clubs are tight with the rules. Depends if the club presidents mk2 Escort is under threat from your car, etc etc...

If the mk1 came out in TD from factory in the US and Europe, you will need to get homoligation papers to prove it and that its not a 'modified' car with a non standard engine.

But even then, like waterboy stated, you'd be thrown in with fairly modern cars in the under 3ltr category. There's a lot of vehicles under that umbrella that will rape a turbo diesel mk1 so it might not be worth your while??

Its one reason why I abandoned my mk1 Targa project in favour of a Rotax 125cc TAG Go Kart!!!

It all depends on if you are after fun or trophies really.

Golfballs is right, its not the easy rout to victory at all starting with a mk1 TD, but its definately going to be fun, so balls to the regulations and the trophies I say.
