Khana Days

Yesterday, junior and I did the State 'Khana round at Nirimba (Quakers Hill).
This was junior's first khana, so being a state round, it was always going to be a challenge for him

I got a little keen by throwing a couple of my daggiest tyres on the back.
Even took them done the road Aussie Best to get new valves and get them checked for leaks etc. Tyre guy: "did you know that these tyres are over 20 years old?". Yep, should be nice a hard by now...
When I went to get the alignment checked, discovered that I had a dodgey tie rod end - bugger.

Anyway, lots a fun had by all.
Here's my effort at three-wheeling. Far from my best effort - had the bib spoiler dragging on the deck at times...

Didn't get many tests right, but he had fun!

Needless to say, Dad did far worse things to the GTI than this...
Pretty much destroyed the inside front
Must be a special set of front for the next one...
Anyone got any 14 x 6 or 7 inch steelies they could part with?

Handbraking on this surface was a challenge (cables still intact).

Clutch is a little worse for wear, and sounds like some of the exhaust hangers have gone west. The car survived though.

The serious guys out their all had specials of course.
Weren't that many road cars actually - a lot of un-registered cars of various sorts...

Nice work Ian. I reckon you should get the P Slots for road use and others for track. I have plenty of steel 14s from Cordobas for free if you want a few.

Did you run the chassis no. through the campaign website yet?

I registered for the GTI web site, but they've got a 24 hour timeout, which
I missed....
I'll do it again when I can be guarranteed to get in in time...

According to the GTI web site, the 'E' reg started in August '83, so mine
could actually be an '83 model.
There a bit of an inconsistency in their web page actually - the text
says that the chassis number should be WVW ZZZ 17EW nnnnnn,
but the picture of the example conpliance plate shows
WVW ZZZ 17ZEW nnnnnn :

which I assume is relatively early in the "E' reg sequence.

Note sure what the phantom 'Z' is about...

State Khana round #4

Well, you might remember that I scuppered my participation in the previous state round 'cos I mis-placed the keys to the GTI...

Round 4 was up at Awaba on the central coast (just shy of Newcastle).
This was a dirt event - there's a very good dirt motorspoort complex at Awaba - Motorkana's, Khanacross, rallysprint...

They were running 4 tests at once, which meant good turnaround.

Since it was a 2 hour drive, I threw the GTI on a trailer behind the VT for the trip up (sorry guys - I *might* have thought about it in my youth, but...)

Actually, I've been having a minor disagreement with CAMS over my basic licence, so I wasn't sure I'd be entering - I made the mistake of admiting on my licence application that my eysight was less than perfect. Ther next thing I know (well, a month later), I get a 'please explain' letter from CAMS in the mail This was a 2NS licence note....
The only thing in danger here was a khana flag!
Moral - don't be honest on your licence application....

Anyway, some hangling/congoling with CAMS officials/club officials - things were ok

Good time had by myself and son, even by the wife who was pit crew

I reckon you've got a genuine Campaign. 17EW is the trademark.
Also all Campaign's were 'A' reg. & only built between Aug. & Sept. 83.

Looking at the photo's I can't see if it has a sunroof.

Anyway, here's a spotter's list to identify a Campaign.

1 "A" registration
2 Steel sunroof
3 Green tinted glass fitted all round
4 The steering wheel is a four pot item but wrapped in leather
5 Twin headlight's. The two inner light's are Fog light's with a switch fitted on the dash facia.There not spot lights.
6 The door lock pins have dimple's on the top like a golfing tee. (Other GTI's were domed)
7 The fuel cap has a spring loaded cover
8 Wheels are Pirelli P-Slots 6Jx14 with the Larger P-Slot. (Mk2 also had the P-Slot but had a smaller P-Slot.)
9 Color's were limited to Mars Red, Alpine White, Black, Silver, Helios Blue & Lhasa Green
10 Chassis # had 17_EW. 17 is a Golf GTI, W meant that it was made in Wolfsburg & E meant it is a genuine Campaign.

By all means have a go. Sprints are the best fun you can have with your pants on

Regards the chassis number, 17EW is definitely promising, although not a guarrantee. I'd be chuffed it really was a gen Campaign tho...
Might even have to stop thrashing it...

I actually checked out this Campaign checklist on the car before I bought it:
1. Dunno about the 'A' reg...
2. It does have a genuine steel 'wind-back' sunroof - check.
3. The glass could have a slight tint - it's subtle tough.
4. The steering wheel on it is a Momo, but I got the genuine four button GTI wheel with it - not leather tho...
5. Fog lamps - vertical pattern - check.
6. Door lock pins not the right type - usual Golf 'mushoom' shape..
7. Spring loaded fuel cap - check.
8. Sorry - wheels long gone...
9. Colour black (who know if it's a respray...) - check.
10. Yes, it's an EW, but that's exclusive to the Campaign (or so I'm told) - check.

Dunno how you get a definitive answer.
Haven't gotten around to asking the GTI club in the Uk, tho I've gotten as far as signing up...

Anyway, getting back to Motorkana's, I'd encourage anyone to have a go - its safe, fun, and (relatively) harmless to the car - honest!

Motorkhanas are great, i used to get some old narrow cheese cutter 13"s throw them on the back and run them at 50-60psi (1 went bang at 60!) just breath on the handbrake and round she goes.

I really need to do some again, its really good for your wheel speed, after rallying for a few years ive lost my edge in the slow technical stuff, not to mention its great fun for peanuts.
