  • Khana Days

Ok you lot - there's been a dearth of pictures of members punting their Golfs in anger...

Now that Matt has sorted out the rear disk setup on the GTI (they went to a good home Static, honest), the clutch actually works properly, and I've fiddled with the gear linkage (the gearshift is sweet now), it was time to point the GTI at a challenge of some sort.

So, today, I ventured out to the Eastern Creek skidpan for Renault's Motorkhana training day. What a good excuse for some lary power slides!

Just have to learn to control that right foot though...

Probably not great, but it was a practice day

There's a definite art to this, and different techniques you can use - don't use the handbrake, but take nice big loops vs use the handbrake and tuck it in tight. I use the latter. Dunno if its faster, but its certainly more fun - you change direction faster alright, but lose momentum, so you smoke it up getting going again...
Gave some of the instructors a wild ride

Haven't got the handbrake set up right yet tho - Matt got some custom cables made, but either they're different lengths or the two calipers behave very differently - one's done up a lot further than the other...

      Didn't break them though Matt

I've only ever done it in a buggy sitting on a beetle floor pan with duel hydraulic hand brakes needless to say on dirt you can get it cranking.

This is the sort of post I want to see.
Good work on getting the pics up so fast Ian. Looks like you had a ball.
The two cables are the same length, but where they go throught the tubes into the car, one sits further in than the other, hence the differing adjustments. Test #1, Glad you didn`t break em.

Nice three-wheelled action there Bluerex - a typical MkI pose
                            Nice car too...
                            Where was this?

The wet surface at Eastern Creek did make for entertaining slides...
Needed an LSD though, although I understand they can tend to rip your arms off in these events

I'm doing the state round at Nirimba next weekend with my son - that will
be a dry tarmac event like the MG one.
That will be my first tarmac event actually - I've done many dirt and grass Motorkana's in the (distant) past, but never a tarmac one...

Should be better actually - more grip

Just outside Canberra, there is this great driver training centre. They have a "wet" area as well as the huge dry area we were using here. Most weekends "Stay-Upright" - a motorcycle rider training org has exclusive use of the area, so we only get to play 4 times a year.

The dry tar does give more grip, but it is that much harder to get the car sliding (and much harder on the tires). Good luck at Nirimba!

                              C

PS I have a carbie issue to sort out, then my wife Kelly wants power steering before her next run - it's great when the family want you to spend money on the car aint it?
