Motorkhana/Autokhana Advice.

Hey guys,

some friends and i are toying with the idea of entering a car into Motorkhanas in WA. However information on this is limited.

Does anyone have any thoughts on a good base (CHEAP) car for those sort of events, it doesnt have to be VAG?

My thinking was something like RWD Corollas, or something similar (I assume RWD is the preferred drive for these events)

the old 2L Escort is a cheap, RWD car to run in these types of events and mods and spares are easy and cheap

if you have a bit of extra cash you could go for the RS2000


or you could go the mk1 1600 with lotus twin cam, but these are deemed collectibles these days

Depending on the Motorkhana, RWD isn't always the best, especially with circuits suited to handbrake turns. A FWD car gives you the ability to lock the rear wheels with the handbrake but still keep the power down through the front wheels.

The Polo does very nicely at the motorkhana events I've run in, and most of the events are won by FWD cars (old stripped out Minis are quite common as serious Motorkhana vehicles).

Most of the Motorkhana layouts I've run in have quite tight corners, and RWD cars need too great a turning radius to 'drift' around the corner compared to the (typically shorter wheelbase) FWD cars.

i think im being swayed into the FWD side of things after reading up a bit.

i would love to use the polo in the events, but insurance, tyres, warranty would make it too expensive, plus with 3 of us looking to buy the car much easier option.

is VW Club a CAMS club do you know gareth?

The VW Club of WA isn't CAMS affiliated at this stage although there has been talk of reintroducing that. I'm not on the committee etc but a couple of other members here may be able to enlighten this a bit more. You would probably need to join another car club and get your CAMS license that way.

a good mate of mine races in motorkhanas and khanacrosses here in SA, there is a big mixture of cars, the escorts always do well however . . . he is running a 1600 golf and is quite compedative in it, he has drilled and screwed the handbrake button down so draggin your butt in the dirt is made so much easier . The rear wheel drives get him on the big sweeping corners but when it comes to the tight stuff he is noticably quicker. It was a stockie auto 4 door with all the interior removed, bilstein sus, but we have just added extractors, 2 1/4 exhaust, 32 36 webber, manual conversion and a heap of home made bracing. He is running his car 2 weeks from now up at monarto, i will post up the footage after the event.

Great cheap form of motorsport.

Dad and I ran for a few years in a buggy, which was based off a modified beetle floorpan. Got it and a trailer for $1000 and went out racing and had a blast

Grab yourself a mk1, 4 doors are pretty cheap and seem to be coming out of the woodwork at the moment. Strip the interior out and go have some fun.

Oh man i'd love to get into this. Might try and wrangle up a mate and grab a Mk1 or a cheap 205gti. My old man was a pretty serious rally driver in South Africa in a Mk1 Escort. Used to do these on the side. Maybe i could get a father son entry going.

Some mates and I are also toying with this idea. Swift GTi for around $5k, get it set-up for motorkhana's, dutton, et al, and on the track below $10k. Mainly add some suspension, bracing, CAMS half cage, seats, semi-slick tyres and brakes. The majority seem to be modified already. Than pull the gear off when selling it.

just found a mk2 golf GTI in perth for 2k.

would a mk2 live through motorkhana?
would anyone know if parts etc are easy to find in perth?

would be the bloke to speak to about parts and stuff. Depends what parts specifically though. many things could be posted easily enough from the east coast.
